I'm not much of a gamer... and now looking again into the video game market there really isn't anything that interests me. Either the marked completely misses the oskar demographic, or I simply don't know the good ones.
Anyway... looking for recommendations - no matter how old. I'm not a sucker for state-of-the-art graphics.
I'll start:
Quarantine
http://abandonia.com/en/games/146/Quarantine.html
When it comes to atmosphere this is one of the best games I ever played. You're a taxi driver in a prison town. After the outbreak of a virus that turns the murderous inmates into even more murderous inmates, the objective is to get the fuck out.
Soundtrack is made up of some australian 80's garage bands that really fits the setting. This was a lot of fun.
Silent Hill
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eds1ivwq1oc
I played the first part through, the second part half way, and the third part more recently.
I think the first part stands out - if you played it when it came out, I guess the impact was much greater. The scripted camera movements, the video filter that makes it look like an 8mm movie... it was nothing like any game I played before that.
I realize nobody likes to read through these, so I'll just list the rest
Leisure Suit Larry 7
Phantasmagoria
Zach Mc Kracken
Monkey's Island I, II
GTA III
I'm really missing the endtime atmosphere games that are not strictly first person shooters where you're frantically pressing the skip button at every cut scene. Generally I think a little more emphasis on the story wouldn't hurt most games.

I play these on a NES emulator against my brother:
North & South
Ice Climber
Super Off-Road
Spy Vs Spy
I wouldn't put any of them on a "best game ever" list, but for multiplayer madness they are cool. My list would be something like this:
Zelda 3 - A link to the past (start with this and then do the rest of the Zeldas)
Super Mario World (start with this and then do the rest of the Marios)
Half Life, then HL2 (then spend 8 years playing CS online :P)
GTA (you might skip the first two but personally I love them)
GoldenEye 64
Mario Kart 64 (or any other mario kart, this is my favorite though)

Since some of the Zelda and FF titles are obvious, I'll throw out one: Super Metroid.

Baseball Stars is my all time favorite game...
For multiplayer I think Bomberman and Goldeneye are all time favs...
Sad end note.. although I'm awful in any type of FPS these days, I used to f'ing own in goldeneye. I'd regularly take 1v3 and win handily... these days I'm a fish at that game as well. oldness = suck

I have a soft spot for 1998 "Thief" The Dark Project. Thief was the first game I played where you didn't mow people down with machine guns...but instead you had to tip toe around slowly and slit their throats in the dark. The game made your heart pump with adrenaline as you tried so hard not to get detected.

I played it through one summer, and after 20 hours it became torture, it gets so monotone.
I really liked Wolfenstein 3d though. - But I think part of the awesomeness was that it was state of the art in (pseudo)3d when it came out.

by gamers who have been around since the NES, Super Metroid is indisputably the best game ever made.
Counterstrike for PC (not Source or whatever other variations they made) is also likely to be the best competitive FPS.
if you're savvy, and you can get your hands on hard to get stuff, you can go to Saturn and other Sega console/emulator games known as Shining Force CD (or a real similar name) and the Shining Force 3 trilogy. i think only the first part of the tril was released in US/english tho. i have not played those, but they are likely amazing since SF2 is one of the greatest and enthusiasts say SF3 is better

Elite - just pure awesomeness and created a complete universe as did Star Wars.
Bounty Bob Strikes Back - classic 80's scrolling platform game.
Resident Evil 2 - leaps and bounds beyond the original (which was also very good).
Legacy of Kain - interesting and with a strong dose of Hammer House of Horror.

On first playing this game I was in awe... just totally entralled and amazed... i tried to capture this experience again by loading it up the other day.... let me just say, that having to wait through two consecutive door opening sequences tilted me so hard I wanted to beat my children...
just fair warning.

lol I played the first part. I generally like suspense much more than the zombi-through-window-when-you-least-expect-it - horror, but I'll see if I can find the second one.
The last boss was a pain in the ass. I still remember that the last safe point is like 20 minutes away and I was short on ammo. Had to reload like 10 times. Yay safepoints.

omg no 1 has said Metal Gear Solid...most of the older stuff has been mentioned so im jus gonna throw out some dreamcast games cuz it was so overlooked.
Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue(GTA3 would of probly not existed without this), Grandia 2, crazi Taxi, powestone, marvel v capcom, Soul Caliber, Resident evil: Code Veronica
but i think D2 is probly the greatest game ever made... somthing like 30k people still play that shit online
and starcraft has like 6 tv channels dedicated to it in korea last i heard...
ffs Blizzard is awesome.
and as far as MMO's Dark Ages of Camelot was my favorite MMO ever (until ToA came out obv).

But American McGee's Alice in Wonderland was a blast.
