Background:I can't stand the radio. Not even a little bit. Maybe I can tolerate 3 out of 5 songs on a random station, but I hate the DJs and comercials drive me nuts. I basically haven't listened to the radio since around 1998.
I don't like the screeching alarm. It would be equally enjoyable if someone woke me up by attempting to ram a cucumber up my ass.
I eventually settled on classical music. If I feel like laying in bed for 10 min before getting up to shut off the alarm (clock is on other side of room) it's cool. There are no commercials because it's publicly supported and dude's not a shock DJ.
Fuck, that was a long intro.
Important Stuff:They just changed their format to NPR. Like I want to be woken up by NPR. Turns out they're still broadcasting the classical music on HD radio. But all the HD radio's I saw are $200. I really don't want to pay $200 for a fucking alarm clock.
Satellite radio? Still $200 and now I have to pay a monthly fee.
Leaving my computer on is not an option because I can hear the fan and it pisses me off. Plus my inner hippy protests at the electrical waste.
I have no idea what to do.

I have no interest in discussing strategy with a protege'. Your job is to remain quiet and listen. I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.

yeah, use your cell. get a sick ringtone to wake you up. for the first bit set your clock radio 5 or 10 minutes behind your cell incase it doesnt wake you up. after that you will be accustomed to waking up to that song. pretty much programming your wake up to that song. works for me

I wake up to classical music (BBC Radio 3) and it's a country mile better than any other station at that time of day. Are you sure you have no other classical options? I know nothing about US radio but there must be dozens of potential stations?

Positive:

89.7 and 97.1 are the same channel located in different places. Plus Mansfield is 66 mi (100km) away.
I don't like the cell phone idea because if it doesn't wake me up it turns off and I'm fucked. Plus, I hit the snooze, only once or twice during the week, but it's still annoying on the cell.

this is the best option, although my ipod radio/alarm clock was like $100. Cheapest solution: buy a cd player/alarm clock combo for ~$20 and a cheap ass classical music cd, or just use an existing CD. problem solved.

I don't have an iPod. I was thinking about opening my clock and attaching a headphone plug so it would play my MP3 player.
Awesome idea bode. Even better, I could go to the columbus public library, since it's the #1 library system in america and get a metric shiton of music and burn the CDs.
Side Note:
Ironically, I've spent the last 3 years thinking "dude shut up about collecting donations and put on another song". Guess I'm reaping what I sowed.

I 100% can't sleep with the computer fan on. I can't sleep hearing someone breathe beside me either. After months of suffering, I finally got smart and bought ear plugs :P (and amazingly I still wake up to my cell phone alarm in the morning with them in)

We have one of these:

The Zen Alarm Clock's long-resonating Tibetan bell-like chime makes waking up a beautiful experience — its progressive chimes begin your day with grace. When the Clock's alarm is triggered, the acoustic chime bar is struck just once … 3-1/2 minutes later it strikes again … chime strikes become more frequent over 10 minutes … eventually striking every 5 seconds until shut off. As they become more frequent, the gentle chimes will always wake you up — your body really doesn't need to be awakened harshly, with a Zen Clock you're awakened more gradually and thus more naturally.

that's sick warpe. I really want an alarm that progressively gets louder like that, but with classical music. Chimes may be good enough, I haven't listened to their sample.
courtie, yeah total dream killer.

I want to get one of these: www.sleeptracker.com
Vibrating to wake me up just when my body is perfect for it? Sounds too good to be true, but the little research I did appears to confirm it.
But then I realized that I haven't really been using an alarm clock for a year.
