I heard that some people have made quite a nice sum of money putting together computers from sratch.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge in this area?

When I assembled my computer from parts I made extensive use of tomshardware.com and anandtech.com for identifying what parts I wanted, and how these would work together. Cause obviously you can't use any processor with any motherboard, or any RAM with any motherboard. Then pricewatch.com and newegg.com for pricing.

Good luck.
AWOL.

putting together a computer is so increadibly simple, if you can put together a easy lego set, you can put together a computer.

As for doing this for other people as a side business or whatever, Ive done it for a few freinds and stuff, but I wouldnt do it for people that I didnt really know. Like journey said, people will start asking you tech questions. The problem is that most people dont really understand the difference between software and hardware. Hell, do you know how many people literally give away or throw out thier desktops and laptops and buy new ones. They do this for such retarded reasons, most of the time all they need is a reformat.

look around for your stuff.

i got an x2 4400+ from dell for $406
i got 2x7800gt's from newegg for $560
2gb ram from crucial

and the rest of my stuff from zzf and newegg more or less. try not to do all your shopping at one site as its usually way cheaper to shop around, plus some sick deals come up (the x2 being one).

check out hardforum.com, best site when it comes to computer stuff. check out techbargains.com too for good deals.

its an easy process to build a computer, hard parts being installing sata hdds if you have an early version of xp and its annoying to put all the hdd light/power/reset cables in.

apart from that its cake.

I build two this summer and designed a friends a few weeks ago, Im pretty sure if you waited for the right deal you could make a profit on ebay.

Like wait for a deal on PCUs buy a bunch wait for a deal on vid cards, and just make a buncha the exact same systems.

Computers? No. Unless a killer robot builds like a computer.

Smithers, use the amnesia ray.
You mean the revolver, sir?

I know how to put a computer a computer together, although don't enjoy doing it because you don't get a guarantee where I buy from unless they assemble and pack it. I do all my maintenance though, Building pc's isn't the best way to make cash because its not too difficult to learn how to do, so almost anyone can do it!

unless you are picky about exactly what components are used in your PC , or you'd like to gain some experience and familiarity with the hardware, it may actually be cheaper (both in time and money) by just going with Dell when they have some good deals with rebates and coupons. Then you'll get a computer with warranty that's tested and confirmed to work together, plus you will get Windows XP as well.

when building your own, you have to order all the separate parts, make sure in advance they'll work together well, and then hope when they all arrive that they are not defective, otherwise you'll end up spending more time shipping things back and forth for replacement and spending time working through compatibility issues.

another thing is that alot of "homemade" PCs are louder systems than those that come from Dell, because they've done the testing and research to know which parts will work well together to produce a quieter system.

that said, building your own can be fun, and lets you build exactly what you want, and you'll learn a little more about how things work and can probably do some light troubleshooting if/when something goes wrong.
