I mentioned in another post about SB.com that I gave poker a try there but got too frustrated with all the suckouts I was experiencing. So instead of withdrawing what I had left there I just decided to use that small amount and try some sports betting. I have bet on sports plenty of times in the past so I am no stranger to it, but I have never done it online.
I've only been making small bets of anywhere between $5 (my normal bet) and $20. I would consider my unit as a $5 bet. So far, I have bet on both MLB and NBA games and am 26-24-1 for +10 units.
I am I was just wondering if anyone else here does any sports betting. It would be cool to get a little thread going for this if there is any interest from anyone else. We could post picks, strategies, etc. Anyone interested? Just curious.

yeah i do alot of sports betting... unfortunately not this time of the year... i bet big on football and NCAA basketball.
If you want know a nice discussion forum for it PM me and ill send the name to you. I def dont bet everyday..just when i really like a game then ill go big... there are a couple of guys on this forum that are awesome and ill tail them when they have a big play

Where do you bet that you can place $5 bets and such?
I was looking arund before, and the minimum seemed to be $100 at any site I saw.

They actually have a minimum bet of $1. There are a few sports books that have $1 minimum bets if you look around they shouldn't be too hard to find.

I have some money in a sporting bet site. They have $1 minimum betting. All I really do now is look at the afternoon games, pick a game that looks like a lot of runs will be scored and put $1 on the overs and root for runs by anybody. Good thing to watch at work. Don't like betting the unders, or on a specific team because then I have to wait until the games over to see if I win. Picking the over, I usually know if I win before work is over.

baseball seems to hard to pick for me.. i know everyone says just do the old "bet the hot pitcher" routine... but it jsut dosnt seem to work for me.
I think college BB is by far the easiest. i usually only bet one game a week or so but you can always find one game that just seems too good and pound it. Ive been doing that for the last 3 years and havent had a loosing season. Back when i used to bet on a daily basis i would have been happy just breaking even. If you really want to try to make money doing it the way to go is only bet on games you really like and go big on them.
I know a guy in vegas that makes a living doing this. He will only bet about 10-15 games a year but puts $100,000 on each of them.

Used to bet on sports. Can't see the point any more. The little fishes give me much better odds than the bookmakers.

I've thought about betting baseball, but have been slightly intimidated by the information I've seen presented in the newspaper, on my pager, and on Intertops.
It all looks similar, something like [making this up] Yankees +185 -- Cleveland - 92
What do I do with that? What does it mean? Maybe I'm better off not knowing?

Two years ago a friend and I deposited 10 total dollars into Bodog sportsbetting. Over several months time we built it up to about $300, doing mostly baseball and football. Our biggest cash was betting the Marlins to beat the Yankees, we made about 200 from that series.
Then we had some setbacks and split our account into two due to artistic differences. I eventually lost it all betting on Pau Gasol to score 15 points in this one game. He scored 14. I have not used any sportsbetting website since.
I still have scant memories of tricks we used and patterns we identified to make money but honestly, unless you plan on doing this full time, or have insider information or work for the Mafia, sportsbetting is -EV. It truly requires complete and utter obsession just to break even. It's not like poker where you can pick on fish. You have to beat the house.
My friend is now a bookie making good money, and I'm a poker player making good money.

I was burned in the Auburn-Virginia Tech football (bowl) game last year. I picked Auburn to win by so many points. They were covering the spread untill they gave up a60 yard TD pass with like 2 mins left. I think that one burned ALOT of people. Anyways, its hard to come out on top betting on games cause EVERY team usually has a bad game here and there, and you better hope its not on the day you picked them.

Basically, this let's you know what you have to wager in order to win x amount. So, using your example, if you saw the Yankees +185, that would mean that you would need to wager $100 to win $185 if you took the Yankees to win. If you saw a line that read, Yankees -110, that would mean that you would need to wager $110 to win $100 if you took the Yankees to win.

Agreed, and I do the majority of my online activity playing poker. However, I love just making a few bets here adn there on sports to keep it interesting. I have only a very small portion of my overall bankroll in a sports betting account and I use it for purely recreational purposes.
Although, I do think that with a little knowledge of the game and some time (if you play in any fantasy sports leagues this knowledge is extremely useful in betting sports) you could make a few bucks over time.
I just enjoy sports immensely and betting on a few games here and there make it even more enjoyable for me.

I don't do any serious betting but I do like Superbowl pools. My old workplace had a huge one going this year, at least 100 people signed up for $5 a "slot"

I've been betting on Bodog and find that a $5 bet on a game makes it more fun. Also depending on how the odds are you can make some good money.
My favorite bet wasn't even on sports. Bodog spread some odds on what country the next pope would be from and Germany was give 6 to 1 odds. I thought that was fishy given how the favorite was German. I put some money on it and lo and behold the next day the odds for a German went to 5 to 6. Of course now my catholic friends are saying I'm going to hell for betting on who would be the pope but I'll be taking my $30 bucks on my little handbasket ride.

My dad's friend bet on the next pope and won like $500. The dude that won had like 7/2 odds. Maybe it was the same deal it was just the country he was from, not the guy...who knows.
Either way, that dude is going to hell for betting on the next pope. 
I laughed my ass off when I heard that you could actually bet on something like that.

I got my feet wet today at Intertops and turned $42 into $52, and have 4 outstanding bets on next WSOP. I actually only bet $32.
I made three single game bets and two safer 3game parlays. Trying to figure out the spread numbers, I bet both sides of one game -- now I know. Hit two singles and a parlay.
I put a dollar each on DBrunson, Ivey, Negreanu, and Greenstein, and if I hit, they pay $100
I'm a noob, but it should be fun.

be careful about those wsop bets... i know its only about a dollar but 100/1 odds are soo far off its rediculous...to bet on anyone individually at this years wsop main event i would need ATLEAST 1000/1 and that is still an underlay

I'm gonna hate to see the NBA season come to an end. That means I'm gonna have to step it up on my MLB bets. The worst part is that I know much more about the MLB than I do the NBA (I have pretty good knowledge of the NBA but not nearly as good as the MLB).

If I were still a professional gambler I wouldn't play NFL football...For starters, there aren't enough games. So trend analysis, which was one thing I was big on, is pointless. Second, you can't turn your money over fast enough to get a reasonable rate of return because you only get to choose from 14 or 15 games a week and each team only plays 16 games. I just never saw pro football as being a viable betting opportunity. That's why most pros end up in what they call linear sports, sports such as baseball and pro basketball.

Not so much about making a profit for me (although that is a nice result) rather than keeping sports a little more interesting.
And, just for the record, the outcome of a sporting event is hardly a random outcome.
