i was just reading a wiki page on pinot noir, and it said this...
Quote:
|
During 2004 and the beginning of 2005, pinot noir became considerably more popular amongst consumers in the United States of America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia possibly because of the movie Sideways.[20] Being lighter in style, it has benefited from a trend toward more restrained, less alcoholic wines.
|
then it said this under merlot...
Quote:
|
Merlot was mocked by the main character in the film Sideways who prefers to drink Pinot Noir instead, which may have played a role in a concurrent slowing of Merlot sales.
|
tbh i think this is probably true. i mean why else would pinot noir suddenly increase in sales, and merlot suddenly drop? too big of a coincidence. its just funny how a few lines in a movie could have that have that kind of influence on people.

reminds me of the matrix.
I think its a good thing in some cases. People ride on a few lines that were never meant to be that important and all of a sudden you have some really good literature discussing a subject that was previously never considered. (This wasn't directed at the Matrix, just that it happens in general, and no I cannot come up with any specific examples. I'm sure someone can.)

funny thing is though that cheap Merlot is better than cheap Pinot Noir...imo its not worth drinking Pinot under £15 ($30). And most people don't spend that....
also people say they never drink Merlot, but then say they love Bordeaux...WTF do think they think is in Bordeaux?
good film though. Makes me wanna do a wine tour of USofA.

I live in the winery capitol of Canada, I can't wait until summer time to do some serious touring.
Also, on the subject of media influencing, I think it's funny how producers of things like gangster rap albums and shit claim they're not influencing kids. Grown adults are influenced by a couple lines from a movie. How is a kid not influenced by their shit?
Not picking on rap or anything it's just the first thing that popped into my head that's often brought up on that subject. And not saying it's the artist's fault for putting stuff like that out there. It's just unfortunate kids are often exposed to stuff like that way too young.

theres a difference. merlot is used as a blend in bordeaux, but i think the most commonly used is cabernet sauvignon. so it is totally legitimate to say you dont like merlot, but like bordeaux. i personally dont care for merlot, and i dont think it has anything to do with sideways, because while i like pinot, im not like ZOMG PINOT NOIR. most the merlot ive had is just kind of 1 dimensional, and doesnt have depth to it.
you absolutely dont need to spend $30 to drink a good pinot also.

true, it is indeed cab sav, merlot just rounds it off - I was being pedantic. But Merlot is a great everday wine. And good for parties etc because its inoffence and relativly cheap.
where as a good Pinot (as I think Miles points out in the film), takes a lot of effort to make - hence cheap Pinot is often lacking any depth of flavour.
as for needing to spend $30+ - I was being a bit of a dick again, but I stand by it about French Pinot - however you can get some nice enough stuff from Oz and NZ now....
apologies if I sound like a twat - I just like my wine, prefebly in large quantities

I'm heading to California in a week with my family and we're doing a good amount of winery tours etc. Should I read up on wines before I go or will they teach me what I need to know? All I've really done with wine before is drink it

I'd personally have a read up on Cali wine before you go. Then you can get a feel for what sort of wine you may wanna try. I wouldn't even no where to start with US wine.
But if any of your family mention Blossom Hill or Gallo disown them on the spot.
Other than that get as much free booze down your throat as possible...
