I like Chemistry because it makes a lot of sense to me and I'm really excited about Organic next year. Also, I really like reading and writing. I just read Nabokov's Pale Fire twice for English and I loved it. I'm currently writing an 8 page essay on it. I feel like I'm in the minority in the world. Anyone else actually like school?

I like the general idea of going to school, improving my mind, learning and meeting new people. However, i hate class, i hate homeowrk and i despise studying. So basically i go to school and do the absolute minimum of those three things.

School was awesome, besides the whole class/studying/testing thing.
Back then it was socially acceptable to not do much of anything and just hang out all the time. It was also acceptable for me to go out and booze 3-5 nights a week, play insane amounts of PS2 with friends, and to whore myself around to (almost) any girl willing and ready. If I went back to that lifestyle now as a twenty-six year old, my family, friends, and (especially) my fiance would all disown me in a heartbeat.
Those were the days...

Now that I've discovered (discovered for myself I mean, I've known about it forever) a certain performance enhancing study drug I consider studying something that's fun to do. The fact that I only have 2 more finals makes me feel like I've eaten half a candy bar and still wish I had the whole thing. Of course it helps to be studying with friends.

Alibi....do NOT look forward to organic chemistry, it'll only make the inevitable repeated ass poundings all the more grim. trust me, it's just about the worst thing ever. I don't know where you go to school, but i think its universally regarded as one of the most difficult/tedious/abstract subjects there are.
its nothing like g-chem. nothing at all.

I've heard it's nationally ridiculously hard and whatnot, but it seems like it applies to a lot of things. In addition, I took an introduction to o-chem last year in my high school and I like it even though I'm sure it has nothing on college o-chem.

take biochemistry and then post again saying what you think of o-chem = walk in the park.

I love school now that I can do it at home on the computer. The best part about my previous schooling years was selling large amounts of narcotics to naive little freshmen with rich daddies. Oh yeah, financial aid refund checks were nice, too. See previous reason. But I'm all grown up now and I just took a masters class online. It was the shit. I've never learned so much from school in my life!

Once I finished high school and all the BS book reports I found out that I like reading. My high school’s teaching methods destroy any chance of free and creative thought. Hell, when I was a sophomore in HS, I had a teacher tell me that my opinion was wrong. Alibi if you would re phrase your question from school to a thirst for knowledge I bet you would have a great number of positive responses.

Never took biochem, but as a mechanical engineering guy, o-chem was my worst subject.
Could have been because the teacher was a douche who knew about as much as the kids who took AP Chem in High School, but I digress.
I really enjoyed Heat transfer/fluid flow and quantum dynamics.

I enjoy reading and even studying studying as long as it's not purely for the sake of doing it. If the subject matter is interesting to me, or more importantly has a practical basis, then I don't mind it at all.
I had the privelege(?) of taking biochemistry twice, once as an undergrad and once in med school. I did fine as an undergrad but didn't enjoy the subject matter at all. I felt like was memorizing structures and energetics just because I had to. In med school we went more in depth, but covered basically the same material, and this time I found it to be much more interesting. We were taught the same pathways but this time we also learned their clinical correlations. It's one thing to know enzyme X's role in this step of pathway Z, but to also know that a particular defect in enzyme X causes this clinical manisfestation suddenly makes the learning process much more fun.
The basic problem I've always had with school is that I failed to see the practicality in much of what I was required to learn (ie. why as a science major did I have to take so many humanities when I could have instead taken courses more pertinent to what I'd actually be doing?). I mean if you want to force me to write a paper on gender inequality I'll do it, but it sure as hell doesn't mean I'll enjoy it.
The way many 4-year colleges/universities are structured in the US, you almost have to do post-graduate work if you really want to get in depth in a particular field. In my opinion many schools require you to essentially waste too much time fufilling other requirements before you can get to that point. Sure you can make the argument that such a curriculum produces "well rounded" students and gives them a chance to live the "college experience," but what about the highly motivated individual that already knows what he/she wants and doesn't need additional guidance? What about the older individual that wants to return to school, but has already experienced 10x more than the average 18 y/o freshman?
Teach me me things that are interesting and have practical value and leave the tedium and busy work out.

I don't think it's that Ochem is hard so much as it is the make or break class in some major tracks, so people cite it a lot as being "oh so difficult". Same with Data Structures for CS at my engineering school.
I do have two ChemEng majors from my school who say Ochem was actually their hardest ugrad class, so I suppose it depends on the university as well.
MechEng here, btw.

To a select few I'm sure it does (teachers, writers, etc.). There are many others that simply find it interesting regardless if it has any practical value to them or not.
