Right now i have an 8 socket power bar with surge protector that has my flat screen, audio, xobx hooked into. problem is that it is about 2 or 3 feet shorter than id like it do be and all the wires are exposed and i dont like it, id like to be able to move it 3 ish feet away from the wall where i can safely hide all the connections.
is it okay to pick up a short extension cord that goes from the power socket into the male connector of the power bar?the effectivley takes the 5 foot or so cord and makes it 8 feet long
if you dont know what i mean by a power bar you could call it a plug bank, or the thing you have all your computer power plugs jammed into.
I dont want to compromise any of my valuables, it would just look a ton better than it is now.

No, it's not alright. Some instructions to devices will state quite clearly that no extension cords should be used. In fact it's good advice in general, regardless. Yes, it will work. Yes, you can start a fire because of current exceeding the rating of any part of that electrical circuit. Yes, that would suck. Yes, the make circuit breakers. And I see them fry all the time on a ship. "Don't let this happen to you!" Do sometimething else or, do wihout...serious...Lou

QFT
Most House fires are started from Electric heaters and people plugging in shit with an Extension cord.
just hire an electrician to put the outlet behind the TV

Yes and no. No if you use just any old extension cord, for the reasons stated above, yes if you go out and buy a heavy-gauge, three-prong extension cord made for the purpose. I bought one off the same rack by the same maker of my power bar and it's all good.

Lol, do like the one guy suggested and shell the money to have a socket installed near your gear.
I've been to many fires that were started by improper use of extension cords.
Another little known fact.
People that bundle up the excess length of extension cord are inviting disaster. Extension cords are meant to be fully EXTENDED, thus their namesake. By coiling or folding the extra wire together it makes it easier for the current running through them to heat up and melt the external covering. Then bing, bang, boom! Your shit is up in flames.
So either locate your stuff as close to an outlet as possible, or only use an extension cord that is long enough without a lot of cord left over. I've also never been a fan of Daisy Chaining electrical cords either.
Food for thought.

Problem solved.

What i have right now is this
Wall socket, triple pronged.
I have a triple prong indoor extension cord plugged in, which is 3 feet long
- it is fully extended
- the female end of the small ext cord has the 7 socket plug bank plugged into it
- i then have my tv/audio/consoles hooked into the plug bank

Maybe just get a surge protector with a longer cord?
