I have a friend that is a manager at a movie theater and i got to screen 300. It was a very good action movie, the kind that made you want to go out and beat someones ass afterward. They didnt do a very good job at establishing motive for war, and the ending left you wanting a bit more, but other than that it was a very good movie. Not quite bravehart, but visually stunning, 2 the point, and almost as satisfying. Its short (90 minutes), takes 15 minutes to get into heavy action, and really has no slow dragging plot lines. On a purely on a knee-jerk endogenous level, this movie kicks ass.......and ive been drinking, so if you think it sucks, watch it drunk!!!!!!

yah I think Im gonna go to imax to see this. I used to have a couple projectionist (or whatever theyre called) freinds that worked at the new theatre downtown. I saw all the matrix movies like a week early, spiderman, ect ect. Those were the days...
It should be insane in imax though, Im gonna go look at tickets now.

Some buddies and I grabbed last nights midnight showing... what an awesome movie. Its pretty much exactly as OP said it was... the ending was a bit lacking. I can definitely think of a better ending, so for those who have seen it... its in white below:
The hunchback should have gone double-agent and killed the persian to get his honor back. Its a travesty it didnt happen
Other than that, the movie kicked ass. Sarcastic assholes killing everything in site.
Its a shame that every movie of this type in some way gets compared to LOTR, though, its hard to avoid atleast in cinematography. Lots of monsters as baddies, swarms of millions of enemies, using giant rhinos and elephants...
Atleast no one was a goddamned super-archer though.
The fight scene with the kings son and his friend fighting back to back was absolutely one of the most well done I've ever scene. Jackie Chan always talked about how the problem with fight scenes with one or two people against a swarm was that the bad guys were always "standing around, waiting to get hit" and there was none of that. The timing was so incredibly superb it must have taken hours to get it right.
Awesome movie.

wait.. where the guys that helped out trojans? I had thought they were athenian, but wasnt sure. Kinda had an arguement about this with a freind after the movie. He tried to tell me they where carthagians (sp?) and I just laughed in his face.

ah .. wikipedia ftw, they were thespians. I remembered them calling them such, but I always thought thespian was just a word that refered to dramatic actors or something. Which would have made sense since atheninians are all artsy fartsy.

It dragged in one part. And that was only becuase you were so used to the action that anything else seemed to drag.

It's good. Don't go thinking it's gonna replace Braveheart or anything as the manliest movie of all time.

I could be wrong, but according to wikipedia the 700 (again this number comes from wiki) that aided the 300 spartans where thespians. I think one of thier names was aracdius or something.

The 700 were Thespians.
The screen play was based upon the book Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae. I just ordered it from amazon and it is supposedly a very good read. I plan on reading it before going to see it in the theater. If anyone is interested I'll give you my opinion of it when I'm done.

I've been waiting for this one for months, I'm gonna see it ASAP, I see lots of movies and they always have previews of other movies and I'm like that one looks dumb, that one will suck, but 300 I knew it was a must see, it will fucking rock, I can't wait, I might get drunk like trick suggested, OK who am I kidding, being drunk is a given, the only time I'm sober is when I play poker. If you had said you have to see this one sober to understand it I'd be like "sorry, not gonna happen".

The movie was visually stunning and in general, kick ass, but I was disapointed with the story line. I guess the movie does say, "based on the graphic novel" and not "based on a true story," but I think the true history is much more inspiring.
I also hated the Queens's part towards the end. I found it completely unnescessary (those who have seen it know what I'm talking about).
Still a must see.

I don't think they showed much of anything in that part.
Interestingly enough, Wikipedia mentions adultery was an alien concept in Sparta and that wife sharing was fairly common (mostly to bear a son to a man without one).
It also says that though homosexuallity was low among male Spartans (unlike most of Greece), the ladies all had a good time together, and married women would choose a teenage girl as a lover.
Now, why wasn't that in the movie?

Now that would make for an exceptionally great movie. Meh, I'm a comic book nerd, so I guess I'll spend the money anyways to go see it. Even though there's no hot girl on girl action, I think this is a must see.
According to your info, not very historically written.

Sorry, didn't know you hadn't seen it. I didn't want to spoil anything. And I suppose it's more based on history than not, it's just the reasons for the battle in the first place are twisted, and things are a bit skewed from there.
Still bound to be one of my favorite movies of all time.
BTW, this movie was shot in 60 days and then had a year of special effects editting. Impressive, no?
