Yeah thats why from now on im sticking with just hbo for tv series. HBO doesn't really give a handful of fucks about ratings or playing to a wide audience.

Same here. Mentalist is a bit better, but I am kinda meh on the whole smarty/crime drama genre.
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

why is this? Is it simply because their revenue structure is different than a network whos revenue comes from advertising dollars? Is this why they curse and show titties and whatnot?

I assume that was meant to reply to my hbo post. Yeah, imo. HBO is going to make a shitload of money almost no matter what their programming is, so it allows them to entertain the notion of shows like the wire. Treme for example, theres no way that show is going to get watched enough to be worth the trouble, but its already renewed for season 2.

HBO gets it's money from subscribers, you buy into HBO and HBO says, "Imma entertain the shit out of you."

Cable channels need to appeal to a broad audience, get a huge chunk of viewers and look to advertisers saying, "I will bring you this many attentive eyes, speak to them."

There's a restaurant analogy in here somewhere, but I'm still pretty hungover.

Here's my shot. It's like the difference between a restaurant which appeals to the masses: quick, check; greasy, salty, sweet; check; priced right, check. And a restaurant which appeals to people by promising them a good meal across the menu, though you may have to pay for the fact that they're aiming for a smaller segment of the market.

The other thing network tv has to juggle besides ratings is that the people who own the huge corporations that spend billions on advertising can pull their shit if the programming is offensive to their quaint judeo christian morals.

Boardwalk Empire with Steve Buscemi looks promising.

Yeah, I just started watching Louie. CK is the greatest comic alive today. Only seen first two eps so far. First was good but not fantastic, second was a bit better and I can tell the show will evolve into something quite unique and quality

Thanks so much for letting me know that Louis CK's new show has started up, I just caught all four eps and its quite awesome.

^ This. I'm currently watching the second on Hulu. However, I think the first episode was a bit better than the second.

However, this comedy will probably get cancelled for the same reasons Arrested Development got cancelled: people are morons.

Ya i thought the 5min of them sitting around the poker table was some of the best TV I've seen this year. I love his stand up and just caught some documentary on Showtime about stand-ups and he was on it.

On a semi-related note, he was in "the invention of lying" with Gervais, it was awful.

Well, it's got two things going for it. You're making sure to watch it on FX and it's pretty cheap to make.

Someone brought up Due South in a conversation recently, and I had completely forgotten about it. I used to watch it when I was maybe 10 and then it went off the air. I just re-watched the pilot. I'll get Season 1. I think it's a pretty good show.

Also watched the pilot of McGyver recently... The monologues are the ramblings of a madman. Idk if it went on like that in later seasons, but it's pretty funny.

I don't think I've ever seen a funnier cameo than Gervais in Louie

Even better than Patrick Stewart on Extras

Just coming in to say that the The Late Philip J. Fry was one of the best episodes of any animated show ever. I don't want to give away spoilers, but they did something with the story line that no movie or series has ever done as far as I'm aware. Even if you're not into Futurama, I highly recommend it.

If season 3 is any more awesome than season 2, my awesome gland is going to explode. In the first couple of episodes Bryan Cranston was still in his Hal character but the way he develops as Walter is just incredible. If he isn't bathing in awards by now, he should.

Louie is so weird/awkward/awesome/etc.. It has no set formula and it's just interesting TV to me.

Eastbound and Down as well as Boardwalk Empire are starting up in September, both will be great.

all caught up on Breaking Bad. Show doesn't disappoint. Just read through this whole thread looking for my next project. I'm thinking about maybe watching a few of the recent shows that will have more seasons, although I have wanted to avoid this in the past. I already need to stay on top of Entourage, Breaking bad and Eastbound and down. Why not a couple more. Dexter and Friday Night lights I am thinking first.

I've never been a huge fan of any drama series unless you count Entourage. Typically they are too slow, too tense, and/or too gory. The Wire was decent. Sopranos seems pretty good but I haven't watched enough. Everything else has been really boring or just doesn't agree with me.
Entourage is by far my favorite show. I think a lot of shit that happens in Entourage doesn't really make sense, and while the acting gets hated on more than it deserves, it's not great (Drama>>>>E>Ari>>>Vince>>Turtle). The entertainment value is INSANE though; I've enjoyed each season of entourage significantly more than any season of any other show.
The other shows I watch or have watched on the reg, best to worst, are:
    1. Family Guy- occasionally the jokes, plots, whole episodes even, get a facepalm, but this is the only show that makes me laugh super hard consistently. If you don't enjoy family guy you are a huge donk.
    2. Curb Your Enthusiasm- dont try watching it with a chick, but this show rarely blows and usually has a fantastic ending
    3. Arrested Development- really sweet show conceptually and generally very clever but overall a little bland and when a joke on AD sucks it often REALLY makes me cringe. like when they tried to make a joke that buster had attended high school for an extra 2 years without anyone noticing. that kind of fail makes me want to punch people
    4. Weeds- fantastic for first 3 seasons. now i want to break the tv every time i watch it
    5. South Park- Either it is a shadow of its former self or I've outgrown it, maybe some combination of the two...I would rate it far behind the others now but still worth catching every episode to see what happens. When I was in junior high-high school it was by far my favorite show.
My bankroll is the amount of money I would spend or lose before I got a job. It is calculated by adding my net worth to whatever I can borrow.

I really don't think it's worth sitting through the 90% of Family Guy that sucks for the 10% of it that's gold.

I would post a graph to prove donk status but you'll probably take me at my word.
