This thread started as Operation 75k. It has since progressed to bigger and better things.

My new Dell and dual Samsung 20" SyncMasters arrived today and since I seem to have convieniently found myself with 3 and a bit months summer hollidays and no "real job" I guess I should set myself a bit of a challenge.

The plan is to try and make $75,000 between the time I finished my exams a week and a half ago and the time I have to go back to college in October. So far since I finished I've played almost 29,000 hands of 200 and 400NL 6max and I'm up $9700. Hopefully I can keep this up.

I can't remember the stuff that happened in the last couple of days so I'm just going to call this day 9 and go from here. Wish me luck please!!

My BR just after I finished my exams was about $9000 I think. So I have to get to $84,000. Here we go...

Day 9

Spent like the whole day getting the new PC set up so didn't get to play much poker. 6 tabled 400NL for about 2500 hands and I'm up $2600 so it wasn't a complete waste. Feeling incredible relief after my $3000 downswing yesterday and the day before. Thought that one was never going to end.

Bankroll is now ~$18300.

Here's a hand that scared the bollox out of me earlier. I'm not used to doing this type of thing since I just moved over from playing really passive FR.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (5 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

saw flop|saw showdown

Hero ($494.10)
MP ($557)
Button ($434.20)
SB ($415)
BB ($236.10)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with J, A. SB posts a blind of $2.
Hero raises to $16, 2 folds, SB (poster) raises to $51, 1 fold, Hero raises to $150, SB calls $97.

Flop: ($304) 7, 2, 7 (2 players)
SB checks, Hero is All-in (~$350), SB folds.

Final Pot: ~$660

That one felt good.

Day 10

Played nearly 4000 hands of 400NL today for a whopping grand total profit of $87. On the plus side though I found out that I'm able to 8 table 6max, pity it was for no money. Breaking even sux.

I'm going to a party in about an hour to get drunk for approximatly the whole weekend so I prolly won't get to play much tomorrow. I'll see if I can fit a few hours in between hangovers.

Br is now: $18420

I know everything is relative to the stakes you play at, but from a $25NL guy's perspective I found this statement funny and it made me sad at the same time.

Sigh, maybe some day I'll be in that boat and can despair over only making $2,600 in a days work. Lol.

lol, when I said that I ment it to be pretty tongue in cheek. A $2600 payday is a big thing to me too make no mistake. I just try to never get excited about things like that because basically I would panic and withdraw the whole lot. Keep in mind that I spent days 7 and 8 losing $3000, I'm still -400 for that 3 day period.

Day 12

So pissed at myself right now, sat down a few seconds ago with a huge hangover, still wearing the clothes I wore out last night and slept on a floor in, in some house where there was a party and donked off almost $400 in 21 hands. I'll put in a good session tomorrow, now I'm going for a shower and a pint of ice cold milk.

edit: busted 900th in the Sunday Million. -$215

Br stands at $17846.

Day 13

Holy shit I just lost 2k in under an hour. I'm going away to die right now, see you in a while.

Ended off the day down nearly $3000. I feel like shit. I also am having serious doubts about my ability to play 400NL profitably. I'm now down to 1.5ptBB/100 after 23,000 hands and I just feel like I'm getting outplayed more often then I outplay others. I'll sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning.

Downswings suck bro, but try not to get down on yourself. A really good friend of mine who plays 5/10 and 10/20 on Party and is very successful (may be one of the biggest 2/4 winners ever) has had far bigger downswings in much shorter periods of time than that. Poker is very brutal and many underestimate the short term luck factor involved. I suggest that you take a break for a little while and come back refreshed.

The other day I'm positive it was you who I stacked at 200nl. The hand went down like this, you raise on the button, I reraise with AKs, you call. Flop K44 two clubs, I bet you call. Turn 7, I check you push, I call. You have 97c and miss the river. Actually that hand is in the video I posted in the SHNL forum, about at the 24:00 minute mark. Just thought I'd bring this up for no reason. Anyways, best of luck to you my friend, I hope things turn around for you. I'm currently on an upswing that came right after a downswing that came after an upswing. It never ends.

Day 14 and 15

Thanks for the comments guys. I was just pissed because I knew that alot of the losses were due to downright bad play and not just variance.

Came back today and went on an absolute bender of a poker marathon. Racked up almost 7000 hands of 400NL for a profit of about 1.2k. I was dealt lots of beats all day though which ate up alot of my profit, I don't mind losing to beats in the slightest though. Still made some silly mistakes, theres lots of things I need to work on.

So an average working day (incl. commute, let's say) for $1.2k (works out at 2.15PTBB/100) - I could live with that. Gg.

Day 16

K, I made a pretty big decision today and decided to withdraw $10,000 from my account and move back down to 200NL. I just felt like I was getting killed at 400NL and it wasn't just variance, I was getting outplayed plain and simple. When I play 200NL I just feel way more confident and the whole thing is much easier. I needed to withdraw that cash at some stage anyway because it's to pay for college next year and I figure that if I'm moving back down then I don't need a 16k bank roll.

So, at the moment my br is $6000. The plan is to 200NL it back up to $12,000 and then take another shot at 400NL and beyond. It shouldn't take me too long to get back there I don't think, especially if I keep playing as many hands as I have been.

Sounds sensible and well thought out. Whatever happens, thats $10k for real life you wouldn't have had otherwise. Also, convert them dollars quick, they're going to do a Weimar Germany over the next 12 months

Day 16 cont..

Dropped 1k at 200NL. This is easily the worst downswing of my life, I'm down around $6000 over the last two weeks, still can't figure out if its just variance or if I'm just shit at 6max in general.

I shall press forward.

Plawed a couple of k hands. Made like $940. Made some donk moves that I'm not happyish with but hey, I can iron that shit out.

Br = $5960

As a side note: variance in SH is sick, I played 3 sessions today, br went:

$5020 - 5750
5750 - 5190
5190 - 5960

Ran like well oiled machinery today for the first time in about 2 weeks. It's such a relief after the shit I went through the last while. Hopefull its over now.

Put a couple of hours in and managed to crush (if I do say so myself) some 200NL tables for almost $2000 worth of profit.

Quit what? Job or poker? 35k a yr woild be pennies to you if you continue at poker the way you are going. I know I certainly feel that 100k/yr would be easy for me. With some smart investing this could go a long way. I really don't understand why all the winning players on this site are so mad to get jobs.

Quit what? Job or poker? 35k a yr woild be pennies to you if you continue at poker the way you are going. I know I certainly feel that 100k/yr would be easy for me. With some smart investing this could go a long way. I really don't understand why all the winning players on this site are so mad to get jobs.
Depending on what you do for a living a job can give you a lot things poker cant. But I think it depends a lot on what kind of person you are and what you do for a living.

Day 22

Played nearly 5k hands today and I'm down $300. It was a tough day, felt like I had lots of tough decisions. On the upside I 9 tabled for the first time ever. Found it ok, I think from now on 8 tabling is going to be my standard ammount of tables as long as I'm not tired or whatever. Also nearly 1.5k$ of rakeback came through today.

Probably won't be playing tomorrow because I'm going to a weekend long music festival like woodstock for the whole weekend after a BBQ and friendly game of poker in a friends house tomorrow. Should be amazing.

600NL, 3ptBB/100, 8 tables = 250$/hr = 135 GBP/hr

6 hours a day, = £810/day
5 days a week = 4000/week
48 weeks/year = £192,000 /yr. = $360,000 /yr

Do oyu not think if you really dedicated yourself to poker for one year you cold reach this stage?

I certainly couldn't More scary is the fact that your only chance of a career is if you keep playing poker - you're in trouble if you want to go back to work after a year, or 5 years, or whatever. And the worst thing about poker being your career is the fact you have to hang out with other poker players. Ugh.

This whole business of employers wondering about gaps in my CV really pisses me off. I just spent the last 17 years of my life working like a bitch in school and university trying my very hardest and pushing myself to the limit mentally so that I can come away with an honerary Bachelors degree next year. Apparantly this degree entitles me to work as an Engineer and says that I am perfectly capable of doing so. Now, after all this work and study stress, as far as I'm concerned, if I wan't to spend 2 years of my life picking my nose, scratching my ass and playing poker then I will do so. If a future employer wants to know what I did for those two years thenfuck him, it's none of his business what I did. If he doesn't like it he can shove his job up his you know what. As far as I'm concerned it'll be his loss because he won't get the of having me in his employment.

As you can see I feel quite strongly on the matter.

Day 29

K I'm back and just about recivered from one of the best weekends ever. Had a great time but now it's time for some poker.

I played some hands yesterday but I'll just roll them into today because there wasn't many of them and I lost alot so I'm psychalogically trying to ignore them!

Today I played 5750 hands and made $820.
EDIT: I forgot to put in that I lost $900 playing 400NL so I'm pretty much just breakeven.

More importantly I've come to a realisation about my pokar playing over the last 3 weeks. I've realised that I'm playing like a stupid robot. It's like I wake up ever morning and try to cram as many hands into the day as I can without ever thinking for more then 1 sec about any of them. I've been playing shit in other words and my results show this. From now on I have 2 rules while playing:

1) Every time I put money into a pot I will think of a reason in my head why I am doing so and why I feel this is the best course of action to take.
2) By the showdown of every hand I will have formulated some sort of guess as to what hands the opponent is likely to have. Doesn't matter if I'm wrong as long as I tried.

I swear I will stick by this and hopefully my results will improve. I'm really getting sick of 200NL.

Day 30

Played 3 sessions todat totalling 4300 hands all together. After a bad start things turned around for me and I catually made some cash. Ended off up about $650 for the day.

Also I played what I rekon to be the best hand of my poker career today against this LAG guy.
Deepstack big decision whick worked out right:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (4 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

saw flop|saw showdown

Button ($317.69)
Hero ($427.02)
BB ($275.05)
UTG ($85.10)

Preflop: Hero is SB with J, A. Hero posts a blind of $1.
1 fold, Button raises to $8, Hero (poster) raises to $29, 1 fold, Button calls $22.

Flop: ($62) J, J, Q (2 players)
Hero bets $40, Button calls $40.

Turn: ($142) Q (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $103.4, Hero calls $103.40.

River: ($348.80) K (2 players)
Hero checks, Hero calls $144.29.

Final Pot: $493.09

Also I've been learning the value of paying attention to the tables a bit as part of my aggreement with myself yesterday. A couple of hours before I put a little note on this guy saying " lead out bluffs". This note let me do this with confidence:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (6 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

saw flop|saw showdown

BB ($509.05)
UTG ($204.75)
MP ($66)
Hero ($311.60)
Button ($211.80)
SB ($124.80)

Preflop: Hero is CO with J, T. SB posts a blind of $1.
2 folds, Hero raises to $8, 1 fold, SB (poster) calls $7, 1 fold.

Flop: ($18) 3, 6, 7 (2 players)
SB bets $15, Hero raises to $55, SB folds.

All in all a good day. Hopefully tomorrow will be the same.

have you been loosening up lately? It seems like maybe you are out making some moves now - more so than that 15% VPIP i see in the 50k hand checkup -

Also, I think that those 2 thoughts are an Excellent way to improve - You see a ton of hands every day and just slowing down that second or two is totally worth it - you don't mind if i borrow that do you?

Ya I'm loosening up a bit, not limping thought, I just don't like limping. I'm basicall just increacing my blind stealing attempts and this is pushing up my PFR. I think it's just against my personality to be really loose.

Day 31

Onother ok day today. Went out drinking last night and I can't remember if I went asleep or not last night, I've been wrecked all day anyway so I only managed 2.5k hands. Ended off up around $800.

Br is getting close to $10,000 again now. I'm trying to decide wheather I should move back to 400NL at $10k or if I need $12k. Any suggestions?
