Given the completion of my 100k operation last week (which took a million years longer than expected), I decided to make a new operation.

My game has come to a point/style that I'm finally pretty happy about. So we'll see if I can keep up the solid play.

Goals for this year:

-200k (or 300k) in 2009 (and consequently, call some sort of tax lawyer and figure out this whole grey area of paying taxes in Canada)
-I'm sick of the Raptors games not being on cable, so I need to get raptorsTV
-Along those lines, I need a new flat screen tv
-I'd like to go to the gym on average 3 times a week (and potentially gain like 15-20 lbs of muscle)
-Perhaps most importantly: Finish writing my thesis and defend my masters, so I can get on with things
-Once I'm done school, travel a lottt (which may hinder the monetary goals but we'll see)

Status for the year:

- 32k of 200k
- and nothing else accomplished!

New OPERATION... heeeeeeere we go!

Thanks man! Well thats the problem... you see. I THINK I might be in one of those countries... but I'm not entirely sure. It's kind of unclear really... as to what is considered a "windfall" winning.

definitely do this. A bunch of countries already have precedents/rulings (I think Australia, most of Scandanavia?). Doesn't Canada already have this? guess you've already searched though.. Going through a big firm to get the legal opinion is worthwhile - pay the exorbitant hourly once then forget about it!
I'm doing this for New Zealand when I finish working in a few months.

A good tax lawyer is worth his/her weight in gold. It might cost $300 an hour but it really will be the best money you can spend. You might also check with them "when" you will be taxed if you are taxed....if the money is working and fluctuating up and down in your poker account, it might be treated like a stock or future and not taxed until you withdraw.

Thanks for the tax advice Daven/Frisky

Yah I'll definitely have to look into a tax lawyer at some point soon. I'm sure Alex and I will make some lame propbet about who can find one the fastest or something :P

Daven - as for Canada having clear laws. Well I think there is a clear law that states "windfall earnings are NOT taxable"... "expected earnings are taxable". So the grey area arises, as to whether or not the poker earnings are windfall or not. If I show them a graph for my 2008, with the most ridiculous swings ever, they would be hard pressed to convince someone that it definitely was NOT windfall....

I see you still haven't changed the title, 2009 does not bide well for you!!!!!

But yeah, make monies and what not.

As for the tax lawyer thing, you need to stop saying "soon" and other vague terms. Set a date and do it. It's the only way it will get done.

You COULD always start some sort of money laundering thing where you could send a few grand to multiple friends acounts and them have them withdraw such untaxed 'windfalls'. Then again this sounds illegal aha, maybe you could ask your tax specialist about that one.

okkkk first poker related post in a while!

I had been running pretty decently lately and playin pretty well until a couple days ago. I'm on a 10k downswing the last two days of running into sets, bad beats, which inevitably results in some form of spew.

The key to my upswing was that for the most part I started each session up. I think the mindset that this contributes to the rest of the session can't really be under-estimated. It just emphasizes solid play from the get-go. It's really discouraging having bad things happen right at the beginning of a session.

I've been treating top pair like the nuts the last couple days. It's not the nuts, and I have to remind myself of that. An extension of treating top pair like the nuts, is never folding top pairs, which I also need to start doing.

Also stop bluffing unbluffables/stations (ie: Ravageur) cause they don't know how to fold. Ever.

This was the last hand of my first session today (down 4.3k). Mega cooler, deep at 5/10 pounds and I just insta quit all tables. At least I'm good at quitting when things start getting bad, and I think a lot of people are pretty bad at this.

£5/£10 No Limit Holdem

UTG (£4970.00)
UTG+1 (£997.00)
Hero (CO) (£2083.00)
BTN (£3083.25)
SB (£990.00)
BB (£1085.00)

Pre-flop: (£15, 6 players) Hero is CO
2 folds, Hero raises to £34, BTN raises to £105, 2 folds, Hero calls £71

Flop: (£225, 2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets £155, Hero calls £155

Turn: (£535, 2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets £380, Hero calls £380

River: (£1,295, 2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets £2,443.25, Hero calls £1,443

Final Pot: £5,181.25
Hero shows:
BTN shows:

BTN wins £5,178.25 ( won +£2,095 )
Hero lost -£2,083

I'm taking the rest of the day off, and given the last two days downswing and lack of playing, I'm pretty much out of contention in the rakerace my site is having. Oh well! Tomorrow will be solid play! RETURN OF THE FOLDING.

So the month is coming to a close, and I'm overall pretty happy with it. Was my best month so far, with around 31ish k including RB and bonuses and stuff.

Made a recovery after my 10k downswing which is nice. Though I've been trying to mix in some stars, to get a stars roll and been playing some 400nl on there. I'm not sure why, but I keep losing on stars lately! I think I'm playing waaay too spewy for some reason, so we'll see if I can fix that.

I'm trying to deposit money on stars, but they have a dumb max deposit limit that I'm trying to work around right now.

I have no overwhelming goals for feb. I reeeeeeealllllly need to start working more on my thesis, so maybe I should take a little poker break for a while till I make some progress. We'll see how that goes!

Yaaah they emailed me with a bunch of documents they need, so once I send that we'll see if that fixes the problem!

In other news, I'm currently in Ravageur Induced Tilt (RITILT - as I will refer to it from now on!)

The last several months, he has won so many all-ins that it defies all laws of probability and stats. So in honour of that, and in honour of my RITILT I thought I'd post this HEM chart of our hands together. It's madness IMO! Maybe I should just feel happy that my 90%'ers are holding up. geeez

Something crazy is going to happen today, I can feel it.

Today is the final day of interpoker's January rakerace. Top 8 players win a free weekend trip to London for some poker prize and to watch a soccer match there.

Right now Ravageur and Alexos are in the top 8. As of last night at midnight I was in 8th place, with the 9th place person like 400-500 mpp's behind me. I wake up this morning and see that he's prob been playing the last several hours.

Today is gonna be a grindddd of all grinds.

Grinding for London imo!

Ugh I can't do it!

I've played 3.5k hands today. Alex played a billion hands today 17 tabling. For some reason whenever I try playing more than 11 tables on inter, there's some bug and the tables don't show up properly.

The other guy who was in 9th has been playing what seems to be non-stop since the middle of the night. He also plays limit which means he gets way more MPP (points) than NL players.

yada yada.. looks like I'm gonna bubble on this in 9th place. There's a 12 person tourney though, and top 2 get the prize. So I'll have to own that up.

I also think I'm gonna take a break from poker for a week or two and really focus on my thesis. I'm pretty happy about how last month ended off and how my play is of late. I think its a good time for me to just take a break, and finish off more important things.

Easier said that done... Genitruc.. any advice is appreciated!

haha I'll do my best. I have a few shots at it with the tourney and other free rolls!

Had my most brutal day in a while today. Dropped a solid 9k.

I think it was just one of those days where you miss the world. But then sweet sometimes you hit the world.. but no wait.. someone hit the world a little better and you get owned. Where you bluff in good spots, but this time they just have it. Where you turn an OESD+FD and for some reason this time, the aggressor decides to overbet shove 400 into 100, and you cry and fold.

I have a theory that whenever I get rakeback, I end up spewfesting it away that very same day! Not sure why that happens, maybe its the free monies!

On the bright side, I did manage to NOT play poker all day (day = daytime) and actually did some thesis work as planned, so thats good!

Goals for tomorrow! Not play poker in the day again, and not lose 9k in the evening!

I did undergrad at the University of Waterloo (though most people probably don't know what that is!) in Engineering. My masters is at University of Toronto in Medical Biophysics (translation: x-ray imaging and cancer research)

Seriously, nice job, and best of luck as you complete your degree. Sounds like you're both learning great science and making a valuable contribution to society. That's awesome.

I'm on quasi bubble tilt at the moment! Well I was an hour or so ago... but still somewhat annoyed.

I came in 9th place in Jan's rake race (when the top 8 got prizes to London). People in 9th-21st got entry into a 12 person freeroll where top 2 got prizes to london.

Played the 12 person tourney today. I'm not really a donkament player but think I did ok. had a few weird spots at the end of the game.

Down to the final 3, and top two get the london package. Third is bubble with nothing.

Hand 1
-no clue if I should fire this turn or not. he had just called me previously with A4o OOP and I took it down with a low pair after we checked it down

$150/$300 No Limit Holdem

Stacks:
BTN ($11930.00)
Hero (SB) ($5855.00)
BB ($12215.00)

Pre-flop: ($525, 3 players) Hero is SB
BTN folds, Hero raises to $900, BB calls $600

Flop: ($1,950, 2 players)
Hero bets $1,200, BB calls $1,200

Turn: ($4,350, 2 players)
Hero checks, BB checks

River: ($4,350, 2 players)
Hero checks, BB checks

Final Pot: $4,350
BB shows:
Hero shows:

BB wins $4,275 ( won +$2,175 )
Hero lost -$2,100

Hand 2
-After flatting me a few times, villain INSTAA shoves this BB. Is this a close decision at all? Is this a standard call/fold?

$150/$300 No Limit Holdem

Converted at weaktight.com

Stacks:
BTN ($9530.00)
Hero (SB) ($6355.00)
BB ($14115.00)

Pre-flop: ($450, 3 players) Hero is SB
BTN folds, Hero raises to $800, BB raises to $14,115, Hero folds

Final Pot: $14,915

BB wins $14,915 ( won +$800 )
Hero lost -$800

Hand 3
-Last hand of the tourney
-Definitely standard once I 3bet, and I think the 3bet is pretty standard too...?

$150/$300 No Limit Holdem
3 players
Converted at weaktight.com

Stacks:
BTN ($7725.00)
Hero (SB) ($6785.00)
BB ($15490.00)

Pre-flop: ($525, 3 players) Hero is SB
BTN raises to $800, Hero raises to $2,111, BB folds, BTN raises to $7,700, Hero calls $4,649

Flop: ($14,910, 2 players)

Turn: ($14,910, 2 players)

River: ($14,910, 2 players)

Final Pot: $14,910
BTN shows:
Hero shows:

BTN wins $14,835 ( won +$7,135 )
Hero lost -$6,760

HERO loses, Hero goes out on the freaking bubble! UGHHH

Sup wingster, why aren't you going?

Keep me posted, I mean I think this was more one of those things that I'd like to win but not necessarily something I could validate buying for only a weekend, type thing. But let me know!

I think plat said 1.5k.

I really wanted to go, but I got the dates mixed up. It's the same weekend as one of my best friends wedding. Dont think I can get out of that one

I havent heard from plat club yet, but 1.5k sounds about right. I already got $430 for travel, so $1070. I'll let you have it for $700?

You really need to see the new head of plat club, Jesper in action. Crazy swedish guy. But i'm sure Rava, genitruc, Alex or Andy already told you that.

700 sounds like a sweet deal. When do you need to know by? There are still some more freerolls that I was hoping to win one in... so probably won't decide until I bubble in those again

Well, I dont have an exact deadline for it, but those freerolls are running for another week or two right?
I was hoping to get it sold a little sooner than that, so I might post it on some of the danish poker forums, and try to sell it there.

And now, back to the grinding. I found a rakerace that starts today, and runs until feb 28. I hope I do better than you did last time

The race is at betsafe. They just moved from crypto to ongame. I am not sure I should tell you this tho, dont want all you annoying canadians to ruin the games The games seem pretty good, but I have only played there for a few days.

I actually wanted to move to ipoker, but their midstakes games are terrible at the moment. I think it's because of the big rakerace they are running right now. 2-3 shortstackers at most tables just playing push/fold.
So right now my roll is split between crypto, ipoker and ongame. I think i'll just keep it this way, and play wherever the games are good.

What about you? Are you moving with Inter to Boss?

I've started a quasi move to stars. "quasi move" = dumb deposit limits. I'm playing 400nl and keep busto'ing my roll with spewiness. Ship $400nl on $1k stars roll.

I'm gonna give boss a shot, though I'm not too optimistic about their software etc.

Death of crypto is sadddd
