so despite the disappointing flame out in the 320 event, tonight brings another relatively successful week of non-grinding to a close. a few minor scores in qualifiers coupled with a few more winning sessions at cash has brought the operation BR to 14.6k after almost 4 weeks of this op.

2 days away from the online games, out to a friend's cottage with a live game and the grey cup sunday.

just got back from an awesome weekend outside the city. decided to jumpstart the week with a little late-night grind and made 500 in 350 hands, mainly from some pretty bad reg at PLO hu.

bang. i love november so far.

Hah I could tell you were pretty wide awake/motivated when we dropped you off - but i thought you would be grinding some Tiger Woods, not PLO. Nice.
    Family Cruise IMO

haha ya i was pretty intense and lucid, actually. still felt like i had energy when i shut things down around 4 30 am.

looks like i may take it easy today and tomorrow and then blast back into the non-grind on wednesday. i expect my play to take place at all sorts of different times through december and i also expect the games to be amazing around the holidays.

this is a little ambitious but i m gonna gun for 10k hands of PLO. doesn t sound too tough except for the fact that there are rarely more than 3 tables of PLO running on PKR. if i m able to hit 10k hands the RB will be much much better than at NL (although the swings will be bigger) and right now my PLO game has really clicked more than ever before. it helps to be playing terrible regs and fish, but man do i ever feel confident.

time to grind Genitruc on Tiger Woods '08. back at it on wednesday. month 1 comes to a close with smiles all around for me.

    Default wrapping up november

november's results exceeded my expectations. not counting a bonus that's on the way, the final tally was +6.6k playing 14k hands of cash (almost all at PLO and NL 100) and a bunch of low-limit donkaments.

it s the 1st month in forever that I've been able to track my all-in EV (nice to run right around EV) and also the 1st time in forever that I deposited an amount on stars that I used as if it were a legitimate roll (as opposed to a random amount to be gambled away on a few donkaments).

a few things jump out at me as i look back on the month.

    the bad:

-i didn't play very well when it came to final tables in donkaments at the end of long sessions. i was often just "happy to be there" and felt relieved rather than hungry for the biggest score possible

-i didn t play very many sessions of epic multi-tabling grinding, so low volume overall

    the good:

-i brought my A game just about each and every session. when i didn't feel i had it, i played in cash games or tourneys where i felt that even my C- game was turning a profit

-i table selected extremely well. played lots of weak players HU, lots of satellites and tourneys with overlays and played a decent % of my hands late at night vs presumably drunk, bad players.

-on days when i didn t feel like playing, i let the game either come to me, or scare me away; i took a shot at playing, allowing myself the opportunity to stop if at any point i felt that i wasn t going to be playing well or the tables didn t feel great. this was probably the most positive thing that took place - maybe half my profits on the month were earned during these "in-between" sessions.

-i didn t worry for a second about rakeback, bonuses or anything besides profitable play at the tables. when i m playing well, the money i m capable of making dwarfs anything the rakeback or bonuses bring, so it s infinitely better for me to just concentrate on bringing my A game than to worry too much about mindless volume

    the "i m not sure" :

-rather than take full days off in between days of hard grinding, i played pretty much each and every day but rarely put in huge sessions that left me feeling drained the following day. this probably was a smart adjustment i made when i felt burned after a sunday of playing a zillion donakments, followed by a day when i just didn t feel capable of firing up any tables.

-i pretty much stayed away from NL200. i don t think this is particularly significant. my winrate is probably the same at 200 (maybe even higher since i value-town myself less frequently) but i filled in the time while waiting for PLO tables to get going with NL 100 and ran like shit but still profited some. if anything, i play a little more alertly at nl200 so this decision (or simple lack of courage) probably cost me some significant EV.

    conclusions:

-14k hands might seem absurdly low, but it probably equates to about 40k hands of NL on a normal site when you factor in the slow play on PKR's software as well as the uber-slow nature of PLO games in general. i won t let myself get caught up in mindless volume considerations, but a month of 10k hands of PLO with 15k hands of NL would be gigantic for me.

-if i can keep crushing PLO, I see no need to move up to NL200 at all, if anything, I should consider moving up to PLO 200. the only argument for moving up to nl200 is that... ummm... i should be making more maniez?

ok that s a pretty good argument. however, my pkr roll is still pretty thin (about 8k after a cashout) and a 10 bi downer would be very annoying. if my roll there eclipses 10k then maybe i ll consider banning myself from NL100 games. until then, i ll playNL l200 when the fish beckon (and i m feeling frisky) but continue to use NL100 as my defacto filler when there aren t enough PLO games running.

-keep grinding the satellites. to say they are gold is an understatement. so fking many ppl who barely know the rules of holdem STILL somehow find their way into just about any qualifier that s offered on stars. i m in no hurry to get grinding a bunch of 100$ + donkaments vs reasonable MTT pros so i ll hopefully continue to crush these super fishy sats and low buy-in MTT's for the next little while.

    december:

this will be kind of a 2-part month.

the first part will last until the 17th. most of my "real life" will be pretty busy up until then so my plan will be to continue a reasonable grind of good, preferably late-night cash games, a few tourneys and sats here and to stay healthy productive away from the tables.

during the 2nd part, all bets are off. i ll be home with family for the holidays, hanging out with a couple poker friends, and - hopefully - getting bored enough to put in some great, juicy, epic holiday sessions vs fish. the two weeks leading up the new year s eve are the best opportunity for a big score that i ve had in a long, long time. or at least that s what i m hoping for/imagining.

i imagine the 2 halves of the month playing out something like this :

part 1 - grind about 3k hands of PLO, 8k hands of NL (mainly at 100) and a few donkaments

part 2 - something like 7k hands of PLO and 10-12k hands of NL, a few bigger buy-in donkaments over the holidays (probably play both mills around xmas and new year s eve), mix in quite a bit of NL and PLO 200.

I would be extremely satisfied with 25k hands of cash and a decent volume of donkaments in december. today i ve tried taking a day off to do nothing, but i find myself instead looking forward to the month ahead, making a long-winded and somewhat hopeful post in this blog, and feeling excited in general.

hope everyone is playing, running and living well.

these are from my desktop from november, don t include about 4k hands of breakeven on my laptop :

very strange day, wasn t really in a great mindset to play tonight but fired up a couple low level sit n gos and played about 45 mins of cash on the side, made a buyin at PLO, still alive in some 7$ PLO/PLHE. no idea why i played it lol.

played a little bit both fri and sat night, both sessions were short and ended with me up about 1.5 BI, so something like +300 overall. tomorrow will be a long day of donkaments with maybe an average of 4-6 tables of cash. something like 1.2k hands of cash and 6-10 donkaments would be nice.

solid 1-outer there to cost me my stack. the river is actually pretty close (what is he potting that I beat?) but since he was pretty spewy it wasn t really a close decision. 6 bi downswing in about 45 mins.

just shut the tables down, a little too disgusted to continue. might fire up some donkaments in a bit.

well, ran brutally in the donkaments, played great, found creative ways to lose (AA vs K9s on bubble, twice AK vs Ax deepstack in the midstages vs spazzy 4 bet shoves, blbhalbhalbha), not much to say. pretty much did what i set out to do today in terms of volume and good solid play so can t exactly be upset at myself. back at it tomorrow.

I totally agree with your Quote, I have found getting my daily duties done. make sure I am caught up on everything and door n phone won't interupt, then I sit down and play off my bankroll. I find night time play is Best for me, although it seems harder to get 6 man table to fill, I find I do best @ SNG's more than big tournaments as to where I get ancey waiting for game to end then I usually turn into A Big Horse.........LOL.......Poker has taught me to have more pacients and to take more time in my plays so I can build from free and keep on building. Just like life, Have to take one step @ a time and keep on going. *Wishing Everyone The Best Of The Holiday Season and many more to come.* Hoping to build Nice Bankrolls for Dec. and start my New Year with Bigger, Better, Banging Play. Yah I don't really get this whole being terrified of losing money. Is it afraid of losing money, or afraid that if you lose money it will be the start of some mega downswing?

We should all be mega de-sensitized to losing money by now!

holy christ just had the wildest session of suckouts in forever. played an awesome, long session and just lost every allin except for 1 when i was dominating or flipping. PKR updated its software so no HH can be imported for now but wooooow it was crazy how bad i ran. shit like losing AIPF vs 57s, calling turn shoves w sets vs bare FD's, etc. amazingly (it ll be clear why it s amazing after i can post some hands) i only lost about half a buyin in prob about 1.5k hands

BUT while i grinded cash i took down the 33$ PLO nightly late tourney on stars for 750 so that day wasn t completely disappointing

maybe 5 hrs if it s not a turbo? turbos rarely go longer than 3 or 3.5 hrs with fields smaller than maybe 400 ppl...

played a pretty annoying session tonight, couldn t win a pot for a good long while at the start then lost 2 quick buyins at the end with KKs on J74sss where I CR flop and shoved then into A5ss then lost 555 on J58dd to KTdd. nothing interesting, but it kind of gave me the bug to grind hard tomorrow. hopefully HEM can finally come out with a patch and i ll be able to post some hands.

    more of the same tonight.

lost KK vs KJ vs AT AI pre in a 109$ FO on stars on the bubble, would have been 3rd.

cash was horrendous, highlight was losing 99 vs 45s AI pre vs a mega whale who had stacked me the previous hand getting it in w JT vs my AQ on QQ9. it s now a mini 7 bi downswing in cash and i felt a little annoyed and tilted towards the end of this session so def gonna clamp down and make sure i m playing my A game over the next little while.

more of the same yet again tonight. dropped a couple buyins and busted out brutally from a tourney in the midstages.

i haven t felt 100% focused at the tables and won t be playing again until i get home for the holidays. the hands i ve been losing haven t exactly been terrible but they aren t near as ownage-oriented as i had been since the start of this operation. it s kind of meh stuff (getting to the river with top set in plo and calling a small bet rather than soul-read-folding, losing my flips in NL) and maybe it s unreasonable for me to expect to magically fold my way away from every cooler and i may go for incredibly thin value on every river...

i m on the fence regarding volume over christmas, it ll depend on the state of the games and the state of my poker appetite. still annoyed that i can t post any hands yet from this downswing. i m definitely considering upping the volume as a way of forgetting the short-term variance. the challenge for me when playing long sessions on lots of tables is to play with the same intensity and focus i play with when i m just 3 or 4 tabling vs late-night donks .

    updates coming this weekend.

the fear is gone. i grinded a ton over the holidays, all of it on a cpy away from home so no HEM and no garphs. unfortunately i ran pretty terribly overall, ended up at something like +250$ over a bunch of hands at NL and PLO 100 but i feel like i crossed a hurdly regarding volume, tilt and willingness to play. hopefully this carries over into the new year and i can finally start posting some hands when i get back home to the grind.

i am very excited about the prospects for poker going forward. my mindset relative to self-management has rarely - maybe never - been this good. letting variance slide off my mind has been easy. it s also fun to run at EV in the first couple of sessions back :

i have hardly been playing and running hot and playing pretty much flawlessly when i do.

outside of money, i have just about zero motivation to play right now which is the result of some great things happening in my non-poker life.

depsite doing really well since the start of this operation, my level of debt hasn't changed much, mainly because of some unexpected expenses. the feb 1st goal of paying down my bank debt seems unrealistic, and i seriously don't give a shit (paying a couple hundred bucks of interest here and there is lame, but wtv) but what I do give a shit about is paying back a stake i was given when i was down on my luck. i might aim to pay back my stake before the bank, even though it makes no financial sense. it makes ethical sense, since free-loading on other people's money isn't a approach i feel great about

SOOO what i m getting at is that tomorrow will be a big grind day. i ll post some results and hopefully run hotter than the sun.

150 hands a day is solid volume amirite?

Yah I agree that it makes more ethical sense to pay off a stake.

Soo what are these outside of poker world events?

played a decent session, almost 1k hands, played awesome and ran terribly, something like 3 bi under ev and made about 40$

also whiffed my 1st 12 donkaments then binked the 11$ PLO final table only for 500ish so made some maniez on the day, also still alive in a 22$ NL omaha.

    yay

so my initial stake was 10.4k USD, back this summer during the death run. i ve made a commitment to pay back 6k of that on Feb 10th.

sooo a little operation-within-the-operation is gonna consist of really jacking up my volume between now and then. right now, with expenses covered into early february, my roll is sitting right around 10k online. if i don't run terribly i should have enough of a cushion so that the 6k withdrawal doesn't hurt me. i mean if i REALLY have to, i can probably survive with a 5k roll playing nl and plo100 in these soft games.

that being said, for this mini-operation i m gonna kick my nitty self in the ass and grind nl200 along with the plo100 games. they are just so soft (possibly softer than 100) that i can't really justify nitting it up at 100.

is making 8k too ambitious a goal for 23 days? it probably doesn't matter, since i control maybe 35% of the results through my play. however, i think if i m able to play good, solid sessions on 20 or 21 of those days, mixing nl200, plo100 with some donakements, i give myself a very reasonable shot at making the 400$ daily that i would need to hit it.

this operation starts tonight. i ll aim for 3 days off overall from now till the 10th. the only really tangible goal i have is playing in the neighborhood of 25k hands (the equivalent of maybe 40k hands on a normal site) which should be possible in about 3 hours of 8-tabling/day. the guaranteed money this should generate includes a 500$ bonus and about 3k in rake, so 900ish in RB. the remaining chunk of cash i need to generate to smash this goal is 6.6k.

i can control my mindset at the tables and my commitment to putting in the 60 hours or so i m aiming for. here we go.

ugh a big part of this operation is sleep management. for a while i have been completely nocturnal (not just going to bed late; flat out producing at night and sleeping during the day). for these 3 weeks what makes most sense is to get up around 8 am and today was my first attempt at reconfiguring my routine.

it all went well, went to bed around 12:30-1 am last night... and fell asleep at 8 am lol. had a really busy day and don t think it would be a great idea to get my grind going on 3 hours sleep.

strike off one of my 3 days away from the table!

    big day tomorrow imo.

meh, pretty horrendous session. don't like my play in about 3 hands, 1 where I 4 bet shoved AKs pre, another where... hmm wait, i guess that's it. played really well, just ran terribly. sick sick whale sitting with 1400bb's at a PLO table, not much i can do besides take my lumps today and come back strong tomorrow... might even get back at it in a few minutes if i don't pass out from exhaustion.

it s really really important that i be as objective as possible in evaluating my play and not get too wrapped up in the emotions of the swings; that will just make putting in significant volume way too tough on my psychologically. even the hand where I 4-bet jammed AKs was fine, i just think it was probably a little more +ev to flat in position (villain had KK but we had been battling a bit...).

glad i played, EV was break even (despite 2 pretty big coolers) but i dropped 600.

    Are you calling a shove?

I think this hand is reasonable to just call a flop wtih, cause I think we're not doing too hot vs his jamming range. Hands like QJ,QQ, KQ obv have us in very bad shape. JJ is meh too.

I suppose our hand is alright vs AQ, KK, AA though.

tonight, as i was finishing up an impromptu meal by my lonesome at a café, some pathetic-looking dude showed up, stumbling, hunched over, munching on the few remaining crumbs of a bag of tostitos.

he was dirty and looked terrible. after making a half-hearted move towards the cashier, he sat down at a table between two groups of hot girls. it probably says something about my own needs that i have a habit of looking outsiders and misfits directly in the eyes, especially when i sense that nobody else will. when he crossed my face in scanning the room, he mumbled - already sensing the inevitable shutdown, i felt - a halfhearted request for money to buy a coffee. i answered with my standard, hardened line "sorry man". he then slumped into himself in a position that left me uncertain whether he was sleeping, crying, or just taking a pit stop on his way back to the bag of tostitos.

on this particular occasion, looking at this particular guy, it was just too much for me. on my way out, i went and bought a large coffee, gently nudged him on the shoulder and handed it to him. unsurprisingly, he looked surprised, as if he didn't really know what to say.

as i walked out, i turned to get one last look at him. barely clutching the coffee with his right hand, he nodded off. on his way down into slumberland, his stubborn right paw brought the coffee down with it, spilling it all over his nutsack. he sheepishly tried sweeping away the burning black gold before passing out, all in the blink of an eye.

what s most interesting to me is just how helpless it left me feeling.

hahaha well told story, but too bad your good deed didn't actually end up helping him.

the rewards of doing good deeds for the overall population definitely exist so don't give up hope, just sometimes people cannot do good for themselves -- either from lack of will or ability.

well the session of death just hit me hard. 1100$ under ev in 1k hands and -1.8k on the session, which doesn t even really do justice to the fact that i get zero equity for the two buyins i lost running into sets w big hands in rr pots. i played super aggro and got fucked hard every time i did anything thin.

    past 2 sessions :

really unsure whether i should play another session at nl200 or move down.
when the vpip's are high and the value bets are like razors, who can be safe?

tonight will be about watching hockey, drinking beer, dancing, possibly rolling one up... basically breathing a bit and forgetting about the terrible poker day.

the only poking i can foresee will involve a member of the opposite sex.
