Since my other thread has basically become a blog of my self-destruction and my 'roll is getting disturbingly close to the felt, I figured I'd post a new, goal-oriented Operation thread to help get my focus back and start winning again.

I'm going to try to get in at least three hours of solid play time in every day, tilt as little as possible, and never play under the influence. For now, my goals are to have $6K by the end of April and $14k by the end of May.

Off to a good start--made $310 today playing NL50 and NL100 6max for about 5 hrs on party. Still gotta do some work on plugging some of the leaks in my game though (namely bluffing too much and calling too much)

Made $30 yesterday messing around on stars cause party was down. Was +$420 today in 4 hrs of NL100 on party. I've realized that until I get to NL400 I can pretty much just coast by playing solid poker and make a healthy profit. There's no need for elaborate bluffs or big calldowns or overly loose aggressive play--I just need to sit back and be patient and let the money from the subpar players come to me.

The last few weeks it hasn't really been the other players beating me, but me beating myself with my sloppy, reckless, and impatient (not to mention intoxicated) play. If you've seen the 1997 wsop where Ungar gets interviewed at the end, I feel kinda like that ("No one ever beat me, I only beat myself.")

Went on hardcore tilt yesterday and ended up donating around $600 and ending up down $500 for the session. Was still on tilt for the first part of my session today, but I pulled it together, and with the added infusion of a $270 cash in a $6 speed tourney, I ended up making $370 back today. I'm thinking maybe I have to stop making marginally +EV big bluffs because the chance of me going on tilt after getting a couple of those snapped off is high and that's obviously disastarous when it happens.

<repeats to self>make other people beat you, don't beat yourself

Haven't been playing much at all the past several days. Went on tilt real bad again a few days ago and was down $700 at one point, but I was able to rebound and win that back and end up +$140 since the last update. Going to try to get in lots of play time the rest of this week and give my BR a jumpstart.

Had an all over the place session today. Started off playing well and got to where I was up almost $300, then self destructed with some terrible play and bad luck. At one point was down nearly $800 for the session, but I managed to regain my composure and ride a real nice rush to end up +$440 on the day. Poker's a real easy game as long as you don't let the swings of the game get to you. You just gotta ride the rushes to the fullest and do your best to control damages during the downswings. I need to keep that in mind next time I start to tilt.

Yeah I'm playing NL100. Yeah 800 is pretty high but I actually had a $1000 swing today, going from $200 up to $400 down to $600 up, finishing at +$520. I have been playing 7 tables and playing ultra aggressive and making lots of big bluffs and calldowns, which makes the variance a lot higher.

Very bad. I lost $500 in a session with some pretty bad tilting on Thursday, went on nuclear suicide tilt on Friday and donked off $1100 in less than an hour, and was still tilting somewhat but managed to win back $350 on Saturday and Sunday.

Sigh. Gonna try to get things back on track today. Must. Not. Tilt. I think I would be best served by just never bluffing except for c-bets and when scare cards hit.

Your blog inspired me to finally register mainly because a lot of what you're going through I've noticed as well in my own game at these levels (I've also been playing 100NL party 6max lately). I found that my biggest problem is that when I get big at a table, instead of stepping back and rebuying at the table max, I'd sit there and try to push ppl around with my stack, or worse yet lose my LAG style and watch it become more of a calling station/tilt/fuck odds I have the stack to see the turn/How did that fish just call me down with 2nd pair and spike trips etc../ .....
It's that stupid feeling that if I lose a big pot with my big stack I get into a mode where I feel I have to win it back, whereas if I'm there with the normal buy-in I don't feel that pressure. I think this leads to the big swings that we're both seeing. Though I've yet to pull a $1100/1-hour swing yet
Anyway, doubt any of this was insightful but maybe I'll see you on a table sometime and we'll chat some party 100nl strategy.
I'm Ravageur111.
Good luck.

I thought I'd bring your intent of this thread back into focus. Your last 5 posts have been "I tilted and lost money". I don't know if you need to step back, or take a break, or what.

But you can't tilt so easily if you're sticking to your Operation here. You clearly have the skillz to be a winning player. You just need to work on having the discipline to ALLOW yourself to be a winning player.

Played some really great poker today. Was very patient and didn't play aggressive to the point of recklessness or make any hopeless bluffs like I usually do, and damn near every read I made was spot-on. I was up $430 in 2 hours or so, and that was without a particularly great run of cards (though although without any particularly nasty bad beats).

I took the day off from playing yesterday and instead re-read Zen and the Art of Poker by Steve Phillips. I think it really helped as I can feel myself now approaching the game with an indifference to the immediate results rather than treating every hand like a life and death matter. I'd highly recommend the book, especially if, like me, you have a lot of trouble controlling your emotions when playing.

Are you playing 7 tables 100nl FR? Surely not 7 tables of 6max?

I cannot belive how much you spunk off tilting.. and what rediculous winrate youd have if you didnt (though I wounder if some tilting helps your image and creates lots of meta-game enabling you to win back a bit easier after tilting?)

Hands from my $1100 tilting session

And yeah, I either 6 or 7 table 6max 100nl. I used to play 8 sometimes, but I get really confused and start timing out on hands when I do that, so I don't play any more than 7 any more.

Took the last 3 days off from poker. Played like a donk again and in all dropped $1230 in the 3 days before that. Wasn't doing any kamikaze style tilting like before, but just playing really poorly and on pretty much perpetual tilt, playing really impatiently and recklessly, and rebelling against my reads and instincts on countless occasions.

I can't seem to get a handle on my discipline problem. Sigh, maybe poker's just not for me...

with a BR at only 1200, if you continue 7 tabling 100nl 6 max, you are running a huge risk of going bust for good. now is a good time to think about that.

Have you thought about moving to full ring for a while. Its a much less fast paced and much slower but surer grind upward than 6 max is. At least until you can get your bankroll up to where you are rolled for 100nl. I don't think theres any harm in playing 100nl with 12 buyins, as long as its not 6 max.

I thin you should give up poker for a year or two, get yourself sorted out, and then, if you can avoid intoxication and tilt, gently slip back into some low-stakes stuff and take it from there.

Buy Zen and the Art of Poker.. Read it page to page and worship it. Its essential readign for any serious player.. I cannot stress enough how usefull it is.

Then whenever you feel yourself tilting just quit, take a few days off and re-read thru zen.. youll come back to the felt clear headed again.

Rinse and Repeat and youll be tilting less and less.

Yeah Zen and the Art of Poker and the Tao of Poker by Steve Phillips are great books; I own both and have reread them multiple times. He really gets at the essence of winning poker play and the common traps and pitfalls that people fall into in them.

I'm currently finishing up my Wasa Poker bonus (currently at 1650 vipp, due to be paid out on the 29th), buying in for 50 at the 100nl tables and playing tight, so I don't think I run the risk of going broke. I ended up making 80 euro playing there yesterday. I played really well with the exception of about 5 minutes of pretty bad tilt that cost me around 150 euro.

My 600 euro martinspoker bonus is also going to be paid out on the 28th, so with that along with the wasa bonus my bankroll is going to get a much needed infusion in just a few days.

Played drunk and stoned and like a deranged gambling addict last week and came very close to busting with what was left of my roll. With my $1260 in B2B bonuses, the money Setz paid me back (finally someone I stake doesn't bust or rip me off!), and murdering NL50 yesterday to the tune of +400, my BR is now at $2270. Gonna grind some more NL50 6max tonight and then move back to NL100 tomorrow.

Also, goals that I'm setting for myself for May our to never play under the influence, tilt as little as possible, and get my bankroll to $10,000.

I completely agree. I find my skills actually improve dramatically after not playing for awhile (I mean, I'm rusty, but the fundamentals seem to be much better). (Of course, the breaks I take are more or less forced on me externally and not poker-related, but I'm sure it still will work the same).

Best advice that gabe (anyone?) has ever given me (loosely quoted and on the phone):

Been playing fairly poorly but more or less breaking even at NL50 6max since last update. I think I'm gonna go into rock mode for a while, since there's no excuse for not crushing those games, and I think just staying out of pots without premium hands should keep me out of the trouble I keep getting myself in. I'm also taking a break from drugs again, which I'd imagine would be beneficial as well.

My attempt to go into rock mode failed on Friday and Saturday after a cold run of cards to start off with tested my patience and I started tilting, and was down around $500 over those two days. Succesfully played good tight-aggressive poker yesterday and made back around $300 yesterday.

If you are going to go into rock mode play full ring.

Its so easy to consistently make money there (especially as good as you are post flop).

My freefall has continued the past week-and-a-half as I just keep tilting. Was down to less than 300 bucks but have made back around 300 the past couple days at NL25. Hopefully this is the beginning of a comeback.

This thread is depressing.

Total n00b asking a well meant question: what are the chances that you're bouncing between 2 addictions and getting beat the hell up in the process?

Might be worth giving up the alcohol/drugs and/or the poker for a couple of weeks and see how that changes things.

Something seems very wrong here...
It's been said a million and one time, but here it is again : stop tilting man. I mean you seem to know and be fully aware that you're tilting and being your own toughest opponent so just stop doing it.

I'm only chiming in because I just finished what could potentially have been a disaster session at 200 nl 6 max (dropping a few buy-in to 2 and 4 outers) and then managed to calm down and come out even on the session. It occured to me that this is really what seperates the decent poker player from a truly profitable one (I'm still working on it as well). You just have to stay calm man. This isn't football or an activity where it helps to get hot and bothered and get revenge. Just know you're better than these fuckers and get even more focused.

I have a feeling that people are getting sick of hearing about your hazed out weekends of throwing away money that's important to you.
Thought I'd just let you know that we do all wish you the best, but you have to want to be successfull yourself.

Ok that's enough cheese for the day. You know what you have to do, just fucking do it.
Good luck dude.
Family Cruise IMO

Up $300 past two days playing NL25 and 50. Got my focus and discipline back, for the time being at least.

Um, probably pretty good. My continually going on tilt is probably a sign of compulsive gambling and not just lack of discipline.

And thanks Ravageur and everyone else for the good advice, hopefully I'll stop being a donk and follow it.

you need to read that original post where ilikeaces staked you for like, 250 dollars was it? And you made like 20k in a couple months.

That should inspire you a bit.
