Ok gonna take rest of day off and do school shit but just looked over pokertracker and I've played about 9k hands of nl200 since moving down and I'm pretty happy with my play overall.

I'm down about 6 buyins for this small stretch but there are only a few hands in the 9k hands that I don't really like.

Starting tomorroow I'm going back to nl400 with the best game selection possible.

played a few K hands of nl200 in past few days and have made a few buyins. Nothing amazing to report.

I'm thinking of moving part of my roll to a new site and playing mainly shorthanded as a prop.

Maybe I should convince myself to sit at some nl400 games I dunno. Feel good with my play but don't feel any urgency to move back up right now.

nothing interesting to update

I've made 2$/hand for my last 500 hands of nl200

going back home soon for holidays and will probably grind quite a bit for a week

I'll post some - hopefully - interesting hands once the occasion arises.

Run well everybody.

Just saw that party is offering reload bonus so it looks like that'll be my gift to myself for the holidays. I figure it'll take about 12k hands to grind off and it's only 200$ but it should be a good incentive to play.

After the holidays I think I'll make my partial move to another site. Prob find a week or so to do nothing as well so it should be fun.

I'll try to post my most interesting hand with detailed analysis after each sizeable session.

One thing I won't be doing is massive multi-tabling just to grind off the bonus. I'll try to keep it around 4 for the mostpart, almost always 6 or less.

If I run well for the 1st 6k hands, I'll play nl400 for the last bit of whoring which should mean I complete it about 50% quicker. I've been sick for a couple days and will probably start this on Sunday.

At least your bonus won't take a million hands to grind off.

So I've started grinding the bonus and so far I've played 2.4k hands and I'm up 6 buyins at nl200.

I'm really not doing anything fancy, just value-betting the shit out of the stations. I'm kinda burned for the moment but I'll post some thin value-town hands soon.

Gah just played a few hundred hands and lost a lot.

I don't even wanna look at Pokertracker but it was pretty bad.

Spewed a buy in the very 1st hand of the session and after that just had brutal shit happen left and right.

Gonna look hard at all of the hands to see what I could have done better. Hopefully I'll be thinking clearly enough to play some more in a little bit.

I was down 980$ in 420 hands.

Just looked over things and 3 of the buyins were spewy.

Of those 3, 1 of them was terrible, 1 of them was marginally bad, and 1 of them is actually o.k. imo.

The rest was just horrible shit running.

If I look up a few posts in my blog, I have all of the advice I need.

I really think owning the games for the past few K hands, having really good results, and basically avoiding all undisciplined poker brought me to a kind of self-satisfied state.

I really want to work on my discipline and lowering the variance of my game so I'm not gonna just move up to nl400 so the pressure of the stakes makes me focus better.

I'm gonna do it at nl200. Taking a break and going back to play in a bit.

Just walked around for a bit and realized that I feel pretty drugged up from the meds I've been taking for my flu since last night.

Prob another sign of arrogance. I never ever play stakes that mean anything to me when I'm not 100% sober.

I'll probably just staw away for the rest of today, although that means falling behind in my Christmas bonus quest pretty significantly.

It's unlikely that I'll be able to play much tomorrow. This opens up the possibility of grinding the rest of the bonus at nl400, where it'll clear significantly quicker.

I mentioned a few posts up that I was making decent $ just by value-betting kinda thin.

None of these hands seem particularly thin to me. If I were up against good opponents, I’d be more likely to keep the pot small since I think bloating the pot will be more likely to induce a big mistake from me on a turn or river bet.

Vs these loose-passive mediocre taggs and fish, I have no problem building big pots with marginal hands when I think it’s likely I have the best of it, since I don’t see them bluffing enough in position and I can easily fold to big river bets if I ever get stuck with a bad card falling. These hands are obviously easier since I’m in position…

Something that I had been doing very well before today's session was really focusing hard on "leaving my ego at the door" when playing these soft lowstakes games. My hand-reading in general is strong enough that I usually know it when my opponents are weak to medium strong and I often get in trouble pushing them around since ppl hate folding (just see the above hands for proof of that).

By avoiding the temptation to push ppl off of weak hands, I lessen the chances that someone makes a ridiculous huge call on me, putting me on tilt, lighting money on fire etc... So instead of using my hand-reading to bluff ppl, I need to focus on it to value-bet super thin.

This had been working really really well for a while but I really think overconfidence lead me to lose that sharp focus on minimized variance and almost guaranteed steady profits.

I played a little more today and won back a couple buyins. For anybody who reads this and hasn't checked out the Jman (Phil Galfond, a.k.a. OMGClayAiken on FTP) WELL thread in the 2p2 High Stakes Forum.

I think it reveals one of the most appealing poker minds/personalities we'll come across in a long, long time.

Too exhausted to make a long update post; logged 2k hands today and so far have logged 5k hands and am up 8 buyins for this bonus hunt.

I need to play 5k more hands between now and Sat so I'm going to use my time in front of my laptop wisely.

OK I'm going to abandon the bonus hunt but I'm really glad I gave it a shot.

I ended up playing 5.5k hands in 5 days at nl200.

I ran at 10.2 ptbb/100 and made just over 2k.

Maybe tomorrow I'll post some hands if I'm bored but I'm really due to just go on vacation for a few days.

Cheers everyone.

I'm not so much into setting very precise goals but here are a few things I'm looking to do in 2008 :

-play 200k+ hands

...

...

K actually I think that's it. I'll likely be out of the country for a couple months and away from poker so that comes out to about 20k hands/month. Added on to school and a cpl other pursuits it seems like a very realistic goal.

Plus, I already played 138 hands... up 1 buyin SHIPIT.

gah back at nl400 and am running like shit so far.

I feel like I've made a couple mistakes that are due to impatience and a bit of rust in my game from the break. Hopefully I can shake it off and hit my stride soon.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get over this ridiculous mental hurdle of nl400. I'm properly rolled for it but I really really have to try to keep my variance low and table select for the next 10k hands, book some small wins and get my br cushion and confidence level built up. For the next few days I'll only update with a grade I give myself on 2 things :

-table selection

-patience (i.e. low variance poker) and emotional control (resisting the urge to out aggro other regs when I'm running bad)

For today, I'll give myself B- for table selection and A- for patience/emotional control (folded AA on dry flop almost 100% sure I was beat, didn't tilt when I started getting reraised, but couldn't resist making a crazy shove that I think is a +ev play but was def higher variance than I'd like).

Just played a late-night session that would have been huge had AK not gone down in flames to 9To vs a 73/54 ai for 120bb's

Still managed to pull a little win, but the most important thing is that I took some time in the important spots, made what I think were lots of +ev plays. Also, I took the time to table select really really well.

As the session wound down, I fired up 3 nl200 tables where I didn't really play my A game but it wasn't anything major.

I give myself A for low-variance emotional control (1 play kept me away from A+ where I made what I think was a good resqueeze... but I don't need to make these plays right now).

Also I give myself A for table selection (a little sloppy at the end with nl200).

Today's results were lame but that's ok since I think Sklansky owes me about 1k.

I've kept up my steady rate of losing 1$/hand since coming back to nl400 while playing some pretty damned good poker.

played 1.2k hands (while 3 and 4 tabling) for -1.1k fsdajkflsadjfk;asdjf;sdafjk;sd

I sat for a loooong time at some great tables but things just didn't work out.

The play was spread over 2 sessions which I'll give cumulative grades of A for table selection and A- for patience and emotional control. I did some high-variance things that I think were pretty good but as you can guess by the results things didn't work out all that great.

Cpl tough spots that I think I'll post in SHNL.

Ok I'm down enough at nl400 so that a few more buyins and I'll start feeling awkward about my roll at that limit.

So I'm gonna grind some pretty hardcore multi-tabling at nl200 this afternoon and probably tomorrow as well. Something like 3-4k hands of clear-headed low-variance poker would be nice.

I'll post the interesting spots here in the blog, maybe with some analysis; haven't done that in a while.

Also, tonight should be an awesome sports night : leafs, raps, ufc, steve molitor defending his title and the ufc replay at 10 (if you know what happens with penn-stevenson, don't say anything!).

Updates coming.

Well that wasn’t bad.

Played 1042 hands for +1.3k at nl200 7-8 tabling.

Ran at 25/17 and feel like I played pretty well.

Folded JJ preflop in a tough spot (I 3-bet a loose UTG raiser on Bth, then 30/23 shoved from the bb for 180 more into 220… bleh).

Also made a cpl big calls, the best one being this fun hand vs a guy who had just spewed away a 450bb stack playing like a complete monkey :

Holy shit.

Just played 550 hands and dropped 1004$ at nl200.

I stopped cuz I started feeling tilty after my went down in flames to KQo on board ai for 200bb's on flop.

I don't really know what to say besides I just reviewed all of the big pots and there were 1 or 2 spots that were slightly overaggro but only because I'm a good hand-reader and knew I was likely beat in setup situations.

Bleh.

Gonna try to play about 1.5k hands of nl400 today, 3-6 tabling, probably in 2 mid-sized sessions. If I drop more than a couple buyins at any point I'll either stop or move down to nl200.

I just played 272 hands of nl200 and lost 775$

2 hands were 100bb tilt-spews. They were just completely gross. I wanna vomit.

I shouldn't have even been playing since I was really really tired.

Also I think a lot of subconscious tilt is the result of built-up anger at myself for my shitty ass results in poker that are all due to a lack of commitment and motivation.

The way this comes out when I'm in this mood is a completely "fuck it" attitude. If you have a tough time imagining what I'm talking about, I mean things like this :

$200 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Monday, January 21, 20:40:41 ET 2008

** Dealing River **
ESAREGOOD shows two pairs, Aces and Jacks.
HERO doesn't show two pairs, Nines and Eights.
ESAREGOOD wins $399 USD from the main pot with two pairs, Aces and Jacks.

What makes that hand even more expert was this hand that happened a few orbits earlier :

$200 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Monday, January 21, 20:32:01 ET 2008
Table Table 127374 (No DP) (Real Money)

ESAREGOOD wins $396 USD from the main pot with a pair of Jacks.

A good poker playing friend was railing this short meltdown and I think he hit the nail on the head when he said "it looks like you're punishing yourself".

There's a lot of truth to that and the only way of getting by it is by playing the hands, putting in the time and striving towards the results I know I'm capable of.

Playing at nl200 where the stakes are just low enough that spewing a few buyins doesn't faze me is not what I want to be doing.

Finally, a reminder of just how badly I own nl200. Here are my last 2 sessions, totalling just under 1k hands :

damn man, i know what its like to be in "fuck it" monkey-tilt mode like the 44 hand...and its not pretty

I don't necessarily think it has anything to do with 200nl not meaning enough for you, monetarily speaking..but more with being in the right frame of mind to play good, solid poker. I know I would probably spew close to the same amount of buyins whether its at 1knl or 200nl if im on tilt/tired mode.

Anyways I hope you PZWN poker the rest of the month. GL sicko

Ok here goes.

It's lame and purely symbolic but I'm renaming this Operation.

I FINALLY got my datamining program working so I'm gonna look to datamine 2-4 for the next few days and only play good tables.

I don't want to play another hand of 1-2 unless my Party BR dips below 24 buyins at 2-4, at which point I'll mix in 1-2 and good 2-4 games.

Simple as that.

conor, take a break and play some of the new cash games at the casino. alex said they are wicked soft, and im sure itd be a good break from the grind. i mean you used to barely play a few hundred hands a day and now you are busting out huge sessions.

for you though, i really do think that you need to stick to 400nl regardless of a couple of bumps unless you _really_ need to drop down.

add my new msn, we can chat about hands again.

BigLRIP :

Try one of the datamining programs that can be found on the bottom left of the PokerTracker main page (I use SpadeEye).

Thanks for the advice andy, I'm adding you right now.

Also, get your ass up here soon so we can be degens at the casino and then have deepstacked highstakes cash games back at my place with our winnings and a super-drunk Alexos.

Just table-selected hard and found some good games at nl400.

Won about 1k riiight away then just lost everything for the next hour. I'm checking my results but I don't really wanna look.

edit : just checked and I lost 650$ in 354 hands.

Nothing was even bad but in this case I REALLY should have just stopped after winning a couple buyins, although I know I was massively +ev at all of the tables I played. Building my confidence is probably more important than anything right now.

Here are the big pots I lost :

$400 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Thursday, January 24, 00:29:01 ET 2008

orbit7777 wins $818.34 USD from the main pot with two pairs, Tens and Fours.

Cold-caller here was an unknown. Since I want to keep my variance low, I think the correct play was just to fold :

ReteDaPesca wins $454 USD from the main pot with a full house, Queens full of Tens.

Like I said before, I want to keep my variance low but I was so sure this opponent was bluffing I couldn’t help calling. He was running 69/12 and was a classic strong=weak player :

$400 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Thursday, January 24, 00:00:00 ET 2008

dauger93 shows high card Ace.
HERO shows high card Ace.
dauger93 wins $698 USD from the main pot with high card, Ace with King kicker.

Villain knows nothing about me and he’s running 29/26. We haven’t tangled. The cold-call preflop was to induce the 63/1 station to overcall from the blinds (even though I’m way ahead of villain opening range). I wanted to make it clear I was never folding on the turn :

$400 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Thursday, January 24, 00:03:26 ET 2008

addict68 raises [$556 USD]
HERO did not respond in time
HERO folds.
addict68 does not show cards.
addict68 wins $906 USD

Last one : taking myself to value-town vs a 63/0 who didn’t seem to enjoy folding any pair postflop.

$400 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Thursday, January 24, 00:05:35 ET 2008

HERO wins $0.64 USD from side pot #1 with two pairs, Jacks and Sixes.
Luckyyl wins $376.22 USD from the main pot with a flush, Ace high.

So that’s that. I don’t really know what the plan is besides continuing to table-select hard and hope to play and run well.

Looking back at those big hands it’s clear that the self-valueownage and turn bluff hands are way too high-variance for my roll at nl400 right now. The AJ call I don’t regret at all since I was as close to 100% sure villain was bluffing as I could possibly be.

Just played an 8-tabling session of nl200 and made a few buyins to finish slightly up for the day.

Nothing wacko to report.

Was really tired tonight but saw a good game at nl400 so I sat down and just 1-tabled for an hour.

What is my mantra these days? Table select and be patient. Target the fish.

So after building up a 1k stack, what do I do?

1st hand vs a 30/27/5 in my database over a large sample :

Rather than 3-bet I planned on check-raising dry flops and playing flops that hit me pretty passively to let him do the betting.

$400 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Thursday, January 24, 23:05:02 ET 2008

Seat 4: HERO ( $586.46 USD )
Seat 5: BertholdHeisterkamp ( $400 USD )

HERO shows a pair of Queens.
HERO wins $150.06 USD from side pot #1 with a pair of Queens.
hanzfat wins $871.80 USD from the main pot with two pairs, Kings and Queens.

Seriously. It tils me soooooo much to spew this way. I really have a tough time expressing just how angry this makes me.

Obv I can justify it by saying that a smart villain almost has to 3-bet bluff me on this flop. Why? Because all I'm repping that beats him is 222 and 666 along with flushdraws. But this kind of overly complicated wacky-play thinking is exactly what I want to iron out right now until I build a comfortable roll at nl400.

I tilt myself so fucking hard right now.

130 hands for -450$.

Don't wanna dwell exclusively on the negative, so I should probably post a decent, if somewhat standard, call I made to build up my stack :

Preflop both villain were running overly loose (40/25ish) so I was definitely ahead of their ranges but was pretty sure I’d get called if I 3-bet. Also they both seemed a bit fishy and predictable postflop :

My new goal is to play 5k hands without spewing once.

NOT ONE SPEW FOR FIVE THOUUUUSAND HANDS.

No spews this morning so I get a checkmark there.

1st a very very marginal spot :

$400 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Friday, January 25, 13:12:04 ET 2008
Table Table 127934 (Real Money)

HERO…

The squeezer from the blinds has done this a few times now so my plan worked perfectly until the original raiser flatted.

This is gross since I really really think it’s unlikely original raiser is slowplaying AA KK here in a possible huge 3-way pot. That means his likely hands are those that he thinks he can play 3-way vs a bluff-squeezer… and QQ TT…. Maybe 99. With all the dead money I just said fuck it.

is all-In.
IhasFlush folds.
kasiiino is all-In.
** Dealing Flop **

kasiiino shows two pairs, Queens and Threes.
HERO shows two pairs, Jacks and Threes.
HERO wins $226 USD from side pot #1 with two pairs, Jacks and Threes.
kasiiino wins $792 USD from the main pot with two pairs, Queens and Threes.

Lame

Here I make a big call vs an aggro villain (29/25) who seems to be repping a busted flush draw or exactly KQ. He took quite a while to call on the turn which lead me to believe he thought he had implied odds with a draw vs my seemingly big hand. I’m very sure he raises trips on the flop or turn…

i m soooooooooooooo fking tilted

Sat in 6 great nl400 games

quickly made about 1.5k in 200 hands playing solid

then got set-over-setted on a draw-heavy board 180bb's deep and then lost JJ to ATo on 8 high board

then I made a huge fold I'm not sure about

then I made a marginal call with 99 vs a monkey that was probably -ev. benny was sweating me at the time and called out villain's exact hand . should have listened to him.

ASDFKJASDJFK;ASDJFKA;SDLJFKADS;LJF;ASDLKJKFSADL;JK FSA;DLFJSA;KLDJFASDKL;JFADSK;JFSAD;SDKAJ;DAFS;JSD

earlier I played a 9-tabling session at nl200 cuz I couldn't get a seat at any of the good nl400 games. felt like I played well but managed to drop a couple buyins.

I am sooo fking disgusted. I know I'm impatient and I'm not the 1st person to run super-swongy and not great when trying to establish himself at another limit.

but fuck me, I'm getting fking sick of this b.s.

Just played 400 hands and lost a few buyins.

I think I came up a little short on my goal of not spewing for 5k hands :

I made it 3k hands without a single spew.

These two hands happened back to back and I think they were the reasons I was tilting without admitting it :

I got completely levelled in a reraised pot where I c-bet with a pair+ nutflushdraw, then went for a check-raise on the turn when the top card paired on a low-card, draw-heavy board. Villain, who was loose, bluffy and strange, overbet allin 320 into 200. I tanked and called... and he flipped 86o for turned trips.

I guess it makes sense, but whatever. Folding is never a big mistake there, and I got caught trying to be a hero. I think I almost called because I was angry at myself that he overbet when I wanted to checkraise to put pressure on a 99-type hand.

It's just another example of allowing emotional instability affect my bottom line.

I managed to get unstuck for the day by, among other things, running kings through aces for a buyin. Still, I was sitting at some amazing tables and couldn't really get on any kind of roll.

By amazing, I'm talking like 3 ppl with 45% vpip or higher, and 2 mediocre taggs with me. It's ridiculous that I can't seem to beat these games badly these days. Just gotta keep on plugging away at building up my equanimity and patience.
when the vpip's are high and the value bets are like razors, who can be safe?

hmm today it only took 217 hands to drop 1.3k. I'm leaving a table with a 62/11 who is limp-calling any amount preflop because it's just not happening for me right now.

I’ve been punishing villain, who is running at 37/0 and making some very weird postflop plays, both bluffs and calls (think peeling flops with 8 hi and backdoor FD, randomly overbetting pot, etc.).

In my experience when someone takes this line (he instashoved river fwiw) it’s very often a frustrated bluff. I dunno maybe I’ve just run weird in the last 500k hands of poker I’ve played and railed :

$400 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Tuesday, January 29, 14:46:32 ET 2008

Villain is 76/52/11 (… not kidding). I was literally praying for him to call the flop shove since I expected to be way ahead of his wheel draw + overs :

Have you thought of a prolonged break? Just to relax and do other things besides Poker?

Anyway, what is your BR management criteria? 30x buy-ins? Although I have hardly played since mid December I still play $200NL with a 14k bankroll.
