I have gained alot from this forum and my game is improving rapidly. I have read what the more experienced members of this forum wrote and I have applied their strategies. My question is why would the experienced members of the site want to share their secrets when it will only mean that there will be more sharks in the water and less fish? I can understand why someone who plays solely for the fun of it would, but why would someone who relies on the money do it?

1) The people here truly enjoy discussing poker
2) The more candid you are with your advice, the more candid other will be with their's. ie. we're all trying to improve our game and multiple brains are better than one.
3)With so many people playig poker now the only times we really run into people that visit here are when we want to (The Gaunlet, scheduled ring games, etc.)
4)Like strangebird said, there are plenty of fish in the sea. Not many people are disciplined or dedicated enough to learn the game and play it well. If people improve their game here then awesome, just so long as there are enough fish to continue to feed our bankrolls.

For me, it's simple. The more advice I give, the better my own game becomes. It's as much for me as it is for others.

Also there's the added benefit of bringing up a good point, and then someone totally counterpointing you. There's so much complexity to this game that bouncing ideas off of others is the only way to explore all of the possibilities. No man is an island, for real. Homey.

Also sometimes a strategy is almost instinctual and you don't really know why you are doing it until you try to explain it to others. It's that old teacher gaining more than the pupil thing...

I actually just give badly flawed advice, and try to take your money at the table.

I don't advise anyone. I just come here to inflate my already bloated ego. And to pick up tips from those who have big mouths and big hearts.

The true fish and re-creational player will not seek out poker strategy forums anyway, if we didn't divulge it here, people would read it elsewhere...

So we really SHOULD be folding top pair on the river when the pot is 15 bets?

No one is perfect, sharing ones strategy can only bring good things, people will argue some of your points and make it better, or offer some pointers to imrpove your overall startegy.....

There is no secret to poker. Someone who tells you there is will probably ask for at least $50 from you momentarily. Don't pay it.
Every discussion you have about how to win enlightens or qualifies things you believe and use. An expert might tell you about a Really Killer Technique that is totally wrong for your personality and style. If you try to implement it, it will feel artificial, and it will not be profitable.
The real difficulty lies in knowing who you are and how you play best. That is your individual secret and it does no one else any good. So talk all you want.

This is not just true for poker. They say that teaching sometimes benefits the teacher more than the student. That said, it is interesting to hear what some poker experts say after writing books. For example, Mike Caro has said that if he had it to do over again, he would not have written his book.
