i did write a very sarcastic response, but meh, seems like a genuine question:
best 5 card had wins:
4,4,4, 6,A - winner
4,4,4, 6,K - loser
DUCY?

The second pocket card is important if it plays.
Here's the example. Suppose Hero has 65 and Villain has 76
If the board is A6642, then Villain wins the pot, because Hero's best 5 card hand is 666A5 and Villain's best 5 card hand is 666A7. The expression for this is "the kicker plays".
But if the board is AKJ66, then the pot is chopped, because both players' best 5 card hand is 666AK.

Yeah, just remember its always the best possible 5 card hand available. Kickers always count except 5 card made hands (straights and flushes).

The Best 5 Cards Win.
If both players have the same ranking of the best 5 cards then it's a split pot.
Only 5 cards count.
Some players also ask if the suits matter if the hands are identical in ranking.
The answer to that is No.
Suits play No part in Hold em.
It would be a split pot if the hands are the same but of different suits.
Good Luck .....
