MTT's are a lot more hit and miss, but the hits are huge. I think I read rilla saying that your ROI % should be around 100 if you're doing good in MTT's. Is that saying that if you have the bankroll to enter in $1,000 tournaments then you are suppposedly profiting $1,000 per tournament in the long run? That doesnt sound too great to me, considering what you could do in the ring games with that kind of bankroll. But Im sure it feels great hitting a huge payoff.
Ring game payoffs arent as huge, but they are more constant. I remember reading one of the great tournament players (cant remember who) say he probably could have made just as much money if not more in his lifetime just sticking to ring games.
Assuming equal skill, where is the money made? Include your online obersvations also. Is the online tournament play juicier than the ever-tightening ring games?

I prefer to play ring games when the sites at it's peak amount of users, and play when the avg pots are like $30-40 at a .50-1 NL table.
SNGs are great too when the "casual" players are online

Between the two I make more playing ring games. However SnGs are my main source of profit, but lately I've found new success three and four tabling ring games.

ring game is always a great place to make money.. unless your michael and rippy who banks on these online tournaments all the time.
the pros mainly play tournaments to for notariaty and to be the best... most players probably make 80% of their money in cash games.

I dont't know why but i absolutely SUCK at ring games now. So for me tournaments are much more profitable right now. I don't understand why. About 3 months ago it was reverse for me. I was mildly profitable at cash games and completely sucked at sit n go tournies.
Now I am doing extremely well on $10 SnGs... pretty much killing them. My tournament play has grown SOO much, and I actually understand what I thought were just "cliches" about playing the player, stack sizes, pulling "rippys" etc.
Whenver I play ring games tho I get my ass kicked. Oh well, I've had a lost more fun playing tournies lately anyways... But I'd still like to figure out how I've gotten so bad at them...

Simple. Winning tournements and winning ring games require different playing tactics. Theses differences are seemingly minute yet these small differneces mean that if someone plays exactly like they do when they play tournements as they do in the ring game then they will lose and vice versa. Winning poker requires intuitive feel for certain situations. When you play one form of poker alot you get a good intuitive feel for that game but that intuition will lead you astray in another game.
