Hi and welcome to FTR, it's good to have you here.
M is a measure of your stack size compared to the blinds and antes in a tournament. For example, if your stack is 1500 and the blinds are 100/200, then your M is 1500/(100+200) = 5. If your stack is 5000 and the blinds are 200/400 ante 25 and there are 8 players on your table, your M is 5000/(200+400+(8*25)) = 6.25.
Another way of thinking about it is - at the current blind level, how many orbits would it take for you to be blinded away if you folded every hand?
The reason M is important is that it determines how you play in a tournament. If your M is high (say above 20) you can play "normally". However, if your M is low (say 7 or below) then your only move is to shove all-in preflop since a standard raise would commit you to the hand.
Hope that helps!

welcome to FTR and if you really want to learn a TON, read the sticky's here, go get Harrington on Hold'em (if you play tournaments) and read every post that Taipan posts.
Do those three and I guarantee you will be a winning player.
Good luck and again, welcome to FTR.
