Theres just no fun when you hit trips. If you bet, you immediately give it away that you have them, and you'd better hope your kicker is good because the other guy with trips is gonna be up against you.
When i get trips at first i think great! but then i realise they just waste my time, theres so many more hands i'd rather have.
Having said that, it is great when the person with trips is lower kickered and wants to bet a lot
And you do rarely get those hands where trips and a flush or straight draw are on the board so you can bet away.
But still these situations seem so few and far between.
And sometimes when someone has trips and theres no draws, everyone just checks to the river leading to an amazingly boring, long hand where the person with trips makes a ridiculous pot bet on the end and it all over.
They bore me they bore me they bore me, mageling
you cant handle the truth!

trips are fun. I tend to go into the pot with bettter cards than the other players at my tables so my kicker holds up more than it doesnt.
gabe: Ive dropped almost 100k in the past 35 days.

bigspenda73: But how much did you win?

Trips are fun if they turn into a boat.

yup.. especially if you are holding a pp that is higher then the pair on the board...

I don't get this thread? Bearing, from reading your post, it seems like you are having trouble playing hands with unpaired cards that trip on a paired board.

nonsense.

You should open up your betting range if this is the case. If your opponents can peg you for trips anytime you are betting agressively on a paired board, you are too passive. Judging from your kicker concerns, (I may be wrong here), but you probably play too many hands. For example, if you are paying A9 and the flop comes AAx, and a lot of money goes into the pot (assuming you don't fill up), you are usually going to be in a world of hurt. If this sounds familiar, I'd tighten up preflop which will lead to easier decisions post-flop. If you don't often play T8o, you won't have to wonder whether you are good facing a 3-bet on a TTx flop...

And I'd rather have AA on a 222 flop, or a 2 card straight flush, or quads, but we just have to work with what we've got!

Don't be this player. When you flop huge hands, the pot should be such that the river betting is very large...

Usually people tend to back off with paired boards;this is why flopped boats/quads/trips with no draw board tend to not get paid. This is why sets are so valuable;boats that fill on the turn or river with straight/flush draws out because you are usually guaranteed some sort of action.

This true;the lowest Axo you should be playing in MP is ATo;anything less then unless you are raising into scared passives then you should much them and not worry about being outkicked.

That's just being retarded. You have to at least bet your trips on the turn;if you try to fake a "bluff bet" on the river everyone will know you have it and fold.

The other day I limped w/ QT os (NL $25 Table) and flopped a boat QQT. I was in MP and there were 4 people in on the hand. Luckily, UTG bet $2 and everyone called! WOOHOOO I'm thinking to myself. Next card: A. Uh oh I thought...now AA and AQ (TT also) beat me but everyone limped PF so I felt good about my hand. Bet $3 and everyone called again (no raise, so I'm feeling even better)! River was a rag and UTG checks and I bet $5 hoping to get a call. Button calls and shows AQ. Crap. I have no idea why he didn't raise me on the river or turn (what a donk) because he would have taken my whole stack based on my "bad" read. Moral of the story: Be happy you flop trips and win rather than a boat and lose.

I believe the OP was distinguishing trips from sets. They play completely differently. I used to hate trips because I would lose more often than not and it was always a big pot because I would bet it aggressively. I figured that I always had the best kicker so I should be able to push it hard. The problem with that is your strength is right out in plain site. They know what you have. If they are calling or betting into you then you are beat. I always figured they also had trips (with a worse) kicker but they almost always had something else. Set, straight, flush, you name it. Anyway, the way I started winning with these is to just bet is like you would a weak pair. Weak bets will entice others to call when they convince themselves you don’t have trips. Basically, you have to convince them you don’t have it to get calls. This keeps the pot totally in control should he have something better than trips.
Stakes: Playing $0.10/$0.25 NL
