After watching the Tournament of Champions today on ESPN I was stoked to watch as my favorite player Mike Mattusow won the title (I knew he won beforehand but watching was still a lot of fun). I was so enthusiastic about his win immediately after I decided to go online and play some ring poker.

Big Mistake.

I really reccomend anyone not playing in short-handed games to NOT play immediately after watching a final table on TV. I couldn't help myself from being much more agressive thean my normal self. Luckily for me I still only play $2 buy-in NLE and after about one buy-in realized my mistake and stopped. I know I too am only a beginner but it seems that poker is truly a game where u cannot let emotions good or bad interfere with your play.

Just my 2 cents.

You have to recognise that certain poker 'moves' work against some players and against others they wont. So pulling mastusow's moves on a fish will only lead to disatser.
Im actually not a fan of TV poker simply because until you reach higher stakes where players actually consider your moves/cards ect the stuff u learn from TV is useless or very basic stuff you can read from the stickies on the site.
Still, i njoy watching it too

Quoted for truth.

This is also a good lesson, as miffed pointed out, that some plays will work well against some opponents and not against others. K9s can be a monster against some, and AJo toilet paper against others.

I realize he's a very abrasive player and many people don't like him. I also realize his style of play has basicly no place in any of my game. I do however admire him for being able to come back after being in prison for half a year and coming in 9th in the main event and then first in the TOC. From what I can tell he also seems to be good at heart(gunna get flamed for that). I don't think anyone can deny that he is at least entertaining to watch and a great player. But I can perfectly understand how many people could really dislike him. So to each his own.

Nah, seriously from any interviews I've seen or read he doesn't seem like a horrible human being. He does have some distorted views on reality (but don't we all?). Man, he was talking about when Raymer took most of his stack in 2004 and he said he got Raymer to put in all his money on a flush draw. That's true, but Raymer's AJ was the best hand at the time. He ommitted that part from his story.

I was very excited to see Matusow and Phil Hellmuth on the final table. I had to watch that. Both entertaining to watch, both amazing poker player, both talk a lot of crap.

Anyway, not MY favorite player but I don't dislike his as mich as I did when I first say the 2004 WSOP on TV.

Hell I enjoyed the banter between the table folk more than I did the poker. Phil going to war with everyone, Mike dogging Phil. Danneman jumping all over Phil for not stacking his chips etc. -- funny as shit stuff I thought.

i thought how chip jett had earplugs was hilarious. if a non professional player that doesn't have a name for himself did that, he'd look like a jerk, but when a guy you see time to time at these guys' levels does it, it's comedy gold. I thought the xmas presents were a great touch too hahaha
