SB ($0.86)
BB ($5.43)
UTG ($3.01)

Hero (Button) ($5.28)
Preflop: Hero is Button with 8 , 8
UTG calls $0.02, 1 fold, Hero bets $0.10, SB calls $0.09, 2 folds
Flop: ($0.24) 5 , 7 , 2 (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks
Turn: ($0.24) 5 (2 players)

River: ($1.76) 9 (2 players, 1 all-in)

Good question.
My thinking at the time was take the free card, see if a set comes up and fold. When I saw it was another low card, I thought eff it.

"My thinking at the time was take the free card, see if a set comes up and fold."
By this statement are you saying If an 8 doesnt come your c/f any turn card? You should be betting strongly for value on the flop from FD, SDs, and AX.
Basically what every one else said. By not betting this flop, your giving the VILLAIN a free card( great odds to draw) and putting yourself in a situation where you have to bet something redic on the turn if your trying to get it in.

If you are only playing 88 for set value in position then just open limp it would make more money then raise check check go all in where only a better hand calls and there isn't enough money in the pot to make such shove.
Can you just once try putting him on a range? instead of "calling down with anything" really he is going to call you down with 72? Was this a value bet?
Like what are you trying to accomplish? plus 30/4/5 isn't that horrible, I would suspect that his calling range on preflop would be less than 30, some may even guess it would only be 22-jj kqs and some suited connectors.
What is your goal in poker? Make money? have fun? torment BC posters?

villain's range is hella wide. Ax, broadways, scs, pairs. You beat most of this on the flop, and he's calling with a bunch of hands that you beat = flush draws/straight draws/7x/5x/66
just under pot flop, same on turn, ez game (20c/60c)
overbet effective shoving the turn is silly

I have no interest in discussing strategy with a protege'. Your job is to remain quiet and listen. I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.
