So I started off with no tools and was doing pretty well... then I got Poker Tracker and I started losing. Yeah, sample size, yadda yadda, but I still quit trying to use it for live play and I've been inching my bankroll back up. I know it definitely has value to me for evaluating my play after sessions, but I'm not confident about using it during. Should I try and use it again and see how things shake out in the long haul, or do you think I should stick to what seems to be working?
Also unfortunately Absolute Poker doesn't seem to work right with the Game Time window so I have to input names manually. I'm sure that distraction doesn't help, but I think the real problem may have been that I wasn't respecting opponents.... or I could have just had a bad run of luck that coincidentally lined up with my use of PT.
So what are your recommendations for tools and live play?

Take a hammer to the table and threaten the other players with it?

I haven't found any glasses that will display HUD stats while playing in a live game so I can only use it when playing online.
See the "error" in your post yet?

I use Ptracker and PAHUD to display the stats and it works great for me to help get quick reads on people. What you have to keep in mind is that in general your sample size will be pretty small so you can't take the stats as gospel, just use them as a guide.

When I first started using a HUD, the very next time I played live, there was a dude to the left of me who saw every flop. In my head I almost saw a green "100/0/0" next to his chips
...then I read a thread where guys were talking about how actually paying attention to live play gives you far 'richer' information about your opponents than stats ever could, which is so true.

Stop using the gametime window. This distraction is enough to make you lose your mind. Get Gametime+ or realtime hud for now. Set it up while playing one table and you will be better off.

I'm still working on multi-tabling live games... the casino gets SOOO pissed off with all the running around...
...okay, so the "live game" joke time was already over....
1) I use PTracker & PA Hud for basic stats. It does a couple of things for me -- a) I can save a bit of money by having historical info on calling stations, folks that almost never fold to cbets, habitual 3-bettors etc. To Jyms point, nothing u couldn't learn with decent observation skills over a few orbits, but I'll save the coupla bucks 'cause I'm a cheap bastard.
2) With the basics covered, I can shift my focus on the next set of reads... trying to pay attention to lines, bet sizing, etc. I can only keep track of so much sh!t (too much weed when I was a youngen'...) and it allows me to skip over manually keeping track of the VPIP/PFR/AF type of stuff.
3) PT (with enough of a sample) can give you ranges that can help as a learning tool (and money making tool...) if you have PokerStove open at the same time. Positionally adjust his stat and drop that monkey into the Stove helps reinforce range and changing equity over multiple streets. I'm not saying be a lazy sh!t and just poke by the numbers, but use it to learn from.
4) PT 3 will be released with a fully integrated HUD (I think it's the PaHUD code, but I'm not positive) This should speed things up and make everything work a little better. Of course, it also means that those of us who've already paid for PT2 will have to pay again...

realtime > gametime
btw, I've played much more live poker than online poker. The best tool I ever saw was a staples easy button. A guy brought it to a 2/5nl game and used it as a card protector. He was completely stone-faced, never said a word. Whenever he won a pot he would just hit the easy button and this lough obnoxious voice would say, "That was easy!"

You see, Oakley sells these glasses, which have face recognition software installed on a portable flavor of Linux
There is some software for it which collects live game hand histories, and generates statistical data. Its called LiveHUD, and LiveMGR.
So you can see the stats on your opponents and have an edge on them, and the unsuspecting bastards won't even know!
