This is just an idea I'm kicking around, and I thought I'd post it in here and see if anyone would be interested. I posted it here in the beginner's forum as I think newer players would get the most out of it, but I think all of us can occasionally use a refresher course.
Here's my thought: I would pick a Poker book (or we could vote on a book.) We would then all get that book (those interested, anyway.) We would all then take said book, and read one chapter a week. I would moderate and guide a discussion on it. I mean, some of it would be sickeningly repetitive for experienced players, but it would give us some very detailed thoughts and analyses on poker strategies... really delving into them. We could all post hand histories relating to that topic, and every week I would write up an analysis of that chapter in a sound bite format that everyone could print up and look at for quick reference. I would also scour the forums for related posts to the topic, and compile a compendium of some of the best threads.
This would probably get cumbersome inside of any given forum, and may be best segmented off into it's own forum. I'd probably have to beg the powers that be or offer sexual favors to get that done, but I think that for the right cause it would be good. I mean, this would be a very topical and targeted forum... so it would have to be strictly moderated.
I think this would be an awesome way to make sure that you're getting every penny of value out of your books. Some of these books have errors, too... so it would be good to eliminate any misconceptions...
I don't know... I'm just throwing an idea out there. Would anyone be interested in this kind of strongly guided discussion. If there's sufficient interest, I'll take it to the powers that be, and see what I can get done.

I was actually going to make a post asking about this after seeing it done on 2+2. with SSH. I think 1 chapter a week may be a little slow, but we have no need to hammer out these details until people have agreed to do it. I would like to be involved with this depending on the book, but yea, most likely I would partake in this and Im sure others would as well.

I think one chapter a week is slow, certainly. We could maybe do two. I think any more than that, and we're missing the point of extracting max value. it's just an idea. I would theoretically guide the discussion, but Others could step in as well. I'd welcome any contributors and help. Hope to see more interest here.

I think its an awsome idea. It would need to be very strictly moderated to keep it spam free, but the hand history/strategy sections arent all that spammed up so it shouldnt be a problem.
Id certainly be interested.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm down.
Honestly, I like the 1 chapter per week. Gives me time to deal with life, still play poker, and not fall behind. In the end that would enable me to actually keep up on it rather than let it fall by the wayside when things get hectic.

1 chapter a week is good. You don't even need to budget time for that, you can just read on the crapper.

I'll speak slowly. And use small words.
Since I'm from Ohio, that's all I know, anyway.

Good question. I'll make like, a poll or something. I've got some PM's into the the X-man working out some details. I'd like to get this up and running by next week sometime.
I'm thinking Theory of Poker would be a good place to start, since it has application to all sorts of games, and would give a nice basis for other topics, but I'll leave it to the masses.

What an awesome idea. I'm very keen, please count me in. Theory of Poker sounds good for starters, I'd vote for Harrington on Holdem Vol I as a second option.
Edit: I also think one chapter a week ... one becuase I'd hate to see a really useful discussion cut short becuase we had to move on to the next chapter, and two - as mentioned above with work, family, life (and playing poker!) I think one a week is enough

HOH would get my vost as best choice.. it's probally the single biggest help to my game out of all the books I've read.
Edit: Not that i'd complain about theory of poker being chosen.

I'd vote HOH1 followed by HOH2, but that's just because I need to reread them anyway. As long as they are both high on the list, I'm happy.

HOH1 gets my vote too. I just finished reading. I read it in about a week so it was like drinking from a fire hose. It would be good to go through it again especially in a moderated and discussion based fashion. Count me in.

The problem with HOH1 is it's SO readable, accessible and accurate that there'd be little to actually discuss!

Ok... I've talked it over briefly with some folks, and it looks like this is a go. I've been asked to wait until some things happen behind the scenes, but it tentatively looks like it's going to happen and get its own Forum. I'm going to spend the intervening time laying out a format for the weekly discussion, but that's going to vary depending on what book we choose. I'll be posting a poll in a couple minutes to see which book you wanted to start with. I think I'm going to only limit the options to Theory and HOH 1, as they seem to be the popular choices. I'll leave the poll up thru Saturday to see what the general feel is. I'll have a tentative format out early next week.

I agree.
ToP however is a right pig to read. I love poker books and read them just for the fun of it, but ToP is NOT a fun read.
That's why it would get my vote... because i didn't read it "well enough"

Hi. This book club sounds like a great idea and I'd like to take part.
This is my first post on the forums. I got started with online poker earlier this year, having only played a couple of home games before that. I've found myself enjoying poker and very much would like to improve. Two weeks ago I got thrown out from the beginners section at Party and moved up to NL25, which so far (15k hands) I've been beating comfortably.
My learning experience has consisted of reading this forum, online articles, and of course playing. I've found following this forum to be very rewarding so thanks to everyone whos taken part in the constructive discussions that I've stumbled across and learned from. Now I'd like to take a more active part in the forum myself.

It's looking very much like I'll be focusing on Theory of Poker first, unless there's a swing in voting today. I'll announce this evening officially.
Glad there's so much interest.

A few people are waiting on the book, and I'm still getting things together. I'd tentatively planned on starting today, but I'll definitely have it running by April 10th. One week from the day.
