Basically, I'm planning on (finally) depositing with the hopes of grinding up the stakes to a point where I can earn some extra income on the side (of my minimum wage work-study job lol).
I have played 50+ live home games (hundreds of hours of poker) over the past two and some years. I've also played online a decent amount, and I've hung around these forums for a while. So I'm confident I can beat the game where I'm going (the microstakes). I'm no expert on bankroll management, but I've read up here. Here's the plan (cut from MS word):
Depositing $100, starting at 3.30 Turbo SNG's.
2.20 Beginner SNG…………....….…….30 BI = $66.00
3.30 Turbo SNG.......................…...30 BI = $99, stop loss = $66
5.50 SNG…………………….…………..…….3 0 BI = $165, stop loss $99
$0.05/0.10 Ring………………...………….25 BI = $250, stop loss $165
$0.10/0.25 Ring……………….…………….30 BI = $750, stop loss $400
Goal: $1,000
I prefer SNG's to ring games, but want to get into ring games since I hear they are more profitable. Also, .05/.10 NL Hold'em is the smallest limit game that Bodog offers which I would be clearly underrolled for (10 buy-ins). The goal is to make it to $1000, with no time limit.
Basically two questions:
1. What do you think of the plan?
2. I'm a first time depositor / grinder... any general beginner's advice for me?

I guess my post was too long-winded / uninteresting to get any replies, but figured I'd run it by the community to see if I was missing anything. Anyway, I'm going ahead with the plan with only a few minor revisions regarding the stop losses (basically, assessing current BR compared to the current, not lower, stakes level). It all makes sense to me, so I've decided to proceed.

You might wanna make the stop losses a little higher. But other than that good luck. Solid plan overall once you raise the stop loses.

Looks like a solid plan! GL with this. Maybe you should re-post this in the Blogs and Operations section? Stop losses don't look too bad to me, just try not to go on any -14 BI down swings!

I am on a similar path to you, but my vice is that i keep coming home on a friday night and playing an sng i cant afford. so my advice is: dont do that, and you will be fine.

Is it worth sticking a small deposit on Stars just to play low limit cash games to help with the transition from sng's? It can be hard to adjust the value of top pair top kicker (at least it was for me). I also like learning cheaply.
I'm moving from 2/5cent to 5/10 atm with what was 250 as the mark to move up but my stop loss is 200 where i will move back down and reassess. 165 would be loosing too much for me , if I let myself lose that much I would sulk for 4 days and be miserable so I would stop and move back down sooner. Whatever soots u tho.

Good luck with your plan. The numbers look ok (barely). But I'd be careful about assuming home game success means you can beat the micros. You also said you'd played a "decent" amount online. Play chips? I ask because you say you are "finally" planning on depositing. Play chips and home games are very different from a nickle/dime online game.
As to whether SNG or ring is more profitable, it depends on the player. I started in ring. I still play ring occasionally, but I find it boring and slow. 90%+ of my poker time is spent in SNG. 5% in MTT and the rest in ring. I do this because I can win virtually at will in SNG at my level. My main trouble is finding enough time to play. I have to grind away at Ring. It's no fun for me.
I also think your BR is too low. I'd suggest a minimum of 200 bucks before trying the 5.50. 250 would be better.
The biggest jump i've made was when I moved from 2.20 to 5.50. From $5 games to $20 games I haven't found a whole lot of diff. Mainly instead of you being the only one paying attention at $2, there will be a couple other people at $5 and 3 or so at 10 0r 20.
