No you play very tight -- maybe even sit out the first 20 minutes or so. This is because a lot of people sign up for freerolls just to goof off, going all in every hand etc.

Very tight mean TABTA -- "traps only", as it were. Call minraises with little pairs and dump unless you set. Bet out aces, kings queens, AK as usual, but don't get a lot of chips involved with anything more speculative than AQ.

I've played a lot of freerolls, by the way, and I still play 'em sometimes, butin my opinion they're a waste of time. Too many people with too little (zero) invested. Even if you're the big favorite Every Time you're all in, you're a longshot because that'll happen a dozen times.

LeFou - Quoting yourself in your sig is very lame

In freerolls most players seem to be a little bit on the drunk side of things, so I'd sit tight for the first hour and let the crazy people knock each other out.

Then as you near the bubble start blind stealing more often and build your stack up.

I joined a 900 person freeroll the other day for the first time. I lost internet connection for a couple of hours and didn't get to play a hand. When I checked how I did the next day, I laughed when I saw that I had placed 118th. I beat out 782 ppl.

You may be better off putting your guy on sit-out until the blinds get high to resist temptation.

Also, people notice you are out and they raise when you are BB to steal your pot. If you have a premium hand and you are BB, unclick sit-out right before it gets a couple places before you and shove the raise in their face with an all-in. I saw some guy do this - it was a d*ck move but it was funny as hell at the same time. You could pull this off once per table change if you choose.

You could also take advantage of the auto sit-outs by raising the BB when you are UTG and stealing their blinds. Of course pay attention to make sure the above doesn't happen.

I'm playing in a $5000 one in a couple weeks. Play very tight. Only play AA,KK,QQ,JJ,AK for the first half. And DO NOT bluff until at least the first half as you will get called by anyone and everyone.

When Empire had a freeroll for 250 people I could consistently make it to the final table by playing TTABTA in the early stages. When the blinds got sizable, I'd steal like once evrey one or two orbits.

I loosened up on the bubble (siginificantly more PFR), but could never bring myself to play like Ripptyde...

At the final table I usually had a decent sized stack and let the small stacks beat each other up, unless I had a premium hand. If I had a small stack when it got down to the last four or five people I'd be all in every hand. If I was big stack I'd PFR and be a bitch. If I was medium stack I'd take risks too...

If a shortack was all in for say 8000 and I had 20000, if no one else had called I'd feel comfortable calling them with any hand. I have a shot of knocking them out of the tourney and putting me one step closer to 1st.

Once it got down to 3 or heads up I was all in basically everyhand.

tabta is "Tight as Baby Turtle's Anus"

i.e. real tight.

I've played maybe 30 or 40 freerolls and didn't place in real money any times. Maybe $50 total.

Divide that $50 by the 80 hours these things took and you'll know what "waste of time" means.
