Your example is why poker is so great.***
Just the other night I was playing in a tournament. I was short stack, and about eleven people were remaining out of sixty. I had 3-7o as the big blind. The blinds were so ridiculously big (and I had such a short stack) that if I didn't go all in I'd only have enough for another big blind down the road.
Anyway, I go all in...Turns out four people call me. River gives me nothing, but all cards are very low, like 2, 6, 3. Fourth and fifth street are both sevens, I take a full boat and increase my stack by five times (becoming the chip leader in the process).
I go on to get second place and win a T-shirt and a free hour of pool (it was one of those amatuer poker league deals at a bar). Fun stuff, though.
*** Your example is also why poker really sucks sometimes, if you're on the losing end of a hand like this.

Some thing that no one mentioned: He had exactly 1000 chips when he pushed, and it was a rebuy event, giving 1000 chips to a rebuy. Could be expensive, but perhaps he likes to all-in pre-flop to try to steal and got both unlucky (people had good enough hands to call) and lucky (in that he hit this time after people did call).
Either way though, definitely not genius...
