player 1 has--------------------Q/4 Player 2 has-------5/3

the board has a straight 45678
is this a split or what? who wins and why!

it's a split. both players play the board since it is the best 5 card hand.

45678

^ neither player has a card that can improve on that hand (in this case a 9).

AF is correct. It's a split. But also just make sure to look at the suit of the cards as well to make sure you aren't overlooking any flushes.
