I play Ring games tight aggressive and do it with the tournament games. I get good results but usually end up as a short-med stack at a final table. I'm wondering what the big stacks are doing that I'm not.

this is part of your problem. you shouldn't be tight/aggressive at the end of tourneys.

it's a few things:

1. they're gambling for chips in spots you're folding in.
2. they could just be solid players making strong plays
3. could be on a card rush

winning a tourney usually takes all 3
take your ego out of the equation and judge the situation dispassionately

jmontis is spot on, include smart plays in list.

The big stacks that arrive at the final table have big stacks because good luck and good play. Good luck because they probably had better hands preflop/postflop thus far; and/or they have produced good play regarding smart/bad decisions.

true.

you can have AK 7 times in a tourney, but if you whiff the flop all 7 times, you wont make it to a final table.

you need cards......and balls.
LHE is a game where your skill keeps you breakeven until you hit your rush of random BS.

Nothing beats flopping quads while dropping a duece!

So by being loose at say a 9 handed final table... does that mean seeing more flops or not letting anyone bully me (i.e. folding top middle pair.)

I progressively get more and more loose through the tourney, but you have to play the smaller hands at the right time.

Try and steal more blinds and make more moves to pick up some extra chips here and there. I think reads become more important later on in the tourney. If somebody is c-betting 95% of the time, you can start re-raising them and taking some chips that way too.

I don't think it means either. It means find more spots to raise. You don't want to see flops. You don't want to get bullied, but that doesn't mean taking a stand by calling off your chips.
