Villian has stats of 60/40 and has been pretty aggressive. Should I have just seen a flop and tried to hit a pair, or is it right to play AK this aggressive preflop against this type of player?

What are you running?
I tend to give UTG a bit more credit even if he has sick stats like that.. so I probably fold to his shove.. it all depends on his UTG range and its too early for you to tell that.. for all you know he has had this awesome run of cards. I think he has 99+ here a lot. Your 3-bet was correct, though.
40 hands is a really low sample.. I'm a TAGG and I have run 60/40+ for 100 hands straight before.

since he is really aggro this is exactly what you want to do. it increases the chances of him bluff shoving or spewing in some other manor.

I mean you might have lost here but still AK is still a fantastic hand against a maniac.
