When playing multiple tables, can it be a disadvantage playing a ring game and a tournament at the same time because they each involve a different strategy? If you are going to multi-table, is it best to multi-table similar game structures provided the limit structure is the same for both tables. (I see the clear disadvantage to playing limit and no limit at the same time, but would this hold true if you were playing a limit sng and limit tourney?

No. Limit/NL combo can concievabley cause a problem but I've done it. NL/NL combo doesn't matter. Strategy is not different - you are trying to play the best hand and get the most chips out of the other guy. This is the case in both cash game and tournament. The only difference is that in toury situation stack size of you and opponents becomse another factor to consider in addition to everything else like starting hand and position.

It is not difficult to shift gears in tournament once you realize that you are the short stack and have to make a stand.

If you are on the bubble or at the final table by all means close out the cash game and give the tournament your full attention. You also should close out the second or third table when you are in a really short-handed or heads up situations.
Send lawyers, guns and money - the sh*t has hit the fan!

DavSimon is an unknown quantity at this point
I frequently play a NL ring game and a MTT at the same time and have had no problems managing the subtle differences in the strategy. Occasionally...like last night I will play a ring game and 2 MTTs - it is more difficult for me to manage (meaning it is not easy) which I like - it certainly helps me remain focused and sharp (less likely to slip into auto-pilot) I stil don't know how people play 4+ tables at once...but it was not too long ago I couldn't imagine playing more than one table effectively. I believe it simply takes time to stretch and strengthen your mind/focus...it comes with practice. I suppose the best advice is to try it out and see if it works for you. I'll tell you when I started playing a NL ring game along with a MTT...I immediately played better in the MTT's...started getting into the money on a consistant basis. It was a good move for me - try it and see how it goes.
