I apologize in advance, because i expect that this question has been asked a million times before, but i can't seem to find a thread that answers my question in search.
So this what i've gathered, there are three types of rakeback:
1. Automatic- Wherein the site deposits rakeback automatically into your account.
2. VIP points system- Where you trade your earned VIP points for cash.
3. Third party- Where you sign up at a third-party website and they assist you in gaining rakeback from a given site.
So my question is on third-party rake-back: Is FTR a rake-back site? I have looked a few rake-back sites and they seem to be layed out much differently to FTR. The reason I ask this is that FTR spends a bit of time selling itself on the information page on rakeback.
Or is FTR just selling itself for sites that provide automatic rakeback?

Just FYI if you've already signed up for FTP without rake back there is still hope. Here is a post I did quite sometime ago.
RakeBack from FTP after you've already signed up!

The object is to fill the pot of experience before you empty the pot of luck."

Go here. Follow their instructions
http://www.raketherake.com
They are a very respected RB provider. It is important to do what they say, to make sure no cookies track you to some other affiliate that would make getting RB impossible.

like, everyone here has set up their own 'rakeback skins' these days - you've probably already got a bunch of pms about it. Go talk to spoon in irc - reckon his articles etc are worth him getting the referral or whatever and it doesn't cost ya anything
also, people are linking you through to rtr. That's cool. Downside is that these days these referrals are WORTH NOTHING TO THE person doing the referring if you play on full tilt poker. Better to get the same rakeback you can get everywhere by using an rtr skin = same rake races, same underlying support, etc AND have some other poker player benefit = more $$ in the rakeback poker player community
