I've just been reading THIS article on calculating pot odds quickly when at the table.

In it, Lou Krieger talks about multiplying the number of outs you have by two and then adding two in order to get a rough estimation on your chances of your card coming up.

My question is simply: when do you do this calculation? Surely the odds are different if you're calculating them after the flop than if you are calculating them going into the river.

In the article, Krieger gives an example of calculating the odds after the turn. Is this the only time that multiplying the outs by two works? If it is, how does the calculation change if I wanted to work it out after the flop?

Thanks a lot for your help with this.

This method, (Outs x 2)+2 is used on the turn. Immediately post-flop use (Outs x 4).

This is the Rule of Four-Two, Rule of 42, etc...

I should add too that the Outs x 4 is odds to come on the Turn AND the River, not just one street. The odds on one street are x2+2

right, you can multiply by two and then add two on the flop for your chances of hitting that card on the turn.

man, take the number of odds you have and multiply by 4 when you see the flop = rough percentage to hit your hand by the river.

when teh turn card comes multiply the number of outs you have by two = rough estimation of your odds to hit your hand by the river.

dont think about it just do the math and that shows you what percentage of the pot you can call on your draw.
easy huh?

(ofc then we get into the implied odds scenario)
