im trying to find the real purpose of a bet like this.
you raise pf standard w/ 78s. get one caller with position on you. flop comes A A 7. typically, i fire one off here about psb. of course i fold to a raise. am i ruining any value here? do i really blow 99 out? do i really fold off anything better here, and/or get a caller out of something worse?
the reason i do it is to take the pot now. if the T comes on the turn, i certainly cannot even call most bets at that point, essentially ruining any reason to avoid betting on the flop in hopes of extracting any value that may be there.
do you bet here and try and take it when you can, but shutting down to resistance? or do you check/call until an over card hits? what is your reasoning, typically?
what if we had 99 on that flop? does that change anything?

You're betting here because any 9,T,J,Q,K invalidates your hand, and you're trying to protect your meager equity.
If your opponent is a total donk, you're betting for value here and hoping the turn comes 7 or under.
In my opinion, if your opponent is aggressive and will rep the 7 or the pockets for you but fold to a raise (same as you play it), a check raise can show a tidy profit. I think you lose a lot here betting out against an aggressive opponent. If he checks through, you can fire the turn hard no matter what it is repping, and if he smooth calls your check raise, god help you.

If your opp is thinking, he probably doesn't believe that you are holding an A and firing a psb at this flop.
