I was reading an article on Betting Patterns by Joe Benik and he suggested that all raises preflop should be the same demonination ( 3 x BB ). He said that those who vary preflop bets tend to fall into patterns that can be picked up. I can see where he is coming from but still believe that varying raise amounts presents more of a problem for players to read and typically range from 3-4.5 x BB, depending more on position rather than my actual hand. I was wondering what you guys thought.

If you are varying your raise size appropriately, then I'm fine with it varying preflop. However, you need to be careful you don't fall into any pattern other than position, situation, etc.. Nothing that leads to your hand strength that is, unless it's misleading and your doing it intentionally.

However, 3xbb + 1bb per limper, or perferrably (for me) 4xbb + 1bb per limper works well, is much easier when running a betpot script, and gets you into alot of similiar situations (same pot size on flop, etc.), so I like it. I wouldn't really go though too much trouble in varying raise size all that much, as I think it doesn't make a huge difference to do so.
