Hello everyone, I am a begginer hold em' player. I have been trying to learn pot odds, and i prefer to convert odds to percentages. For example, with six outs left on the turn+river, I have about a 24% chance to hit an out. If I have to call a $5 bet in a $40 dollar pot, I should go ahead and do so, since the % of hitting an out (24%) is greater than the % the pot is offering me. (45/5 -- 11%) I have next learned that for bluffing, you want the pot odds percentage to be greater than your chance of winning, which seems to contradict the original pot odds theory. Can someone please explain this, thanks.

I found it was always easier to use ratios instead of percentages. You dont really see many players on here refer to percentages when calculating pot odds. In your example, your about 4 to 1 to hit your flush and hes offering you 8 to 1 odds (5 goes into 40 8 times). For me its easier to calculate it this way since your just using what you have to call and what the pot size is to calculate the ratio. Then you just memorize the odds of hitting different draws.

Well first, do not base you flop call on the odds of you hitting by the river (unless everyone is all in)

It is costing you $5 to call a $40 pot (8:1, 11% whatever is easier for you). But the $5 is only buying you the turn card. 1 card. Not the turn and river. On the turn, it will cost you more money.

So, in stead, look at your odds (%) to hit the turn card when comparing your pot odds.

You are really looking at 8:1 pot odds (11%) vs 8.3:1 odds (12%) to hit, giving you a +0.08 EV.

If you don't hit on the turn, you need to re-evaluation with your new pot odds vs drawing odds.

Make sense?
