So I finally got my laptop and hooked it up to the internet in my college dorm at the University of Wisconsin. The agreement said that I wouldn't use the internet for anything "illegal." The question is will I get kicked out if I play poker on the colleges internet connection? Does anyone have any past experiences with this at all? Just wondering before I start playing...

Ok, thanks for the reply man. If I get kicked out of the dorm it's gonna be a bummer, but I don't think they will kick me out of college for this. Hopefully I'll get an apartment or something. Now it looks like I have something to do tonight, well besides party.

You won't get kicked out. I played in a dorm in China of all places, where they watched everything I did 24/7 and nothing happened. So I think you're safe here. Then again, I kind of hope you get kicked out and end up in the Supreme Court making online poker legal whee. But no worries.

I've played internet poker in my college dorm many times. I've had zero trouble.

QFT. It would be pretty strange (though... possible?) for a college to screw you over on a matter that hasn't really been decided yet. I say game on.

Also: why would your school have any interest in stopping your quiet, peaceful gambling activities? It's too small of a disturbance (if even) for anyone to put any effort in addressing. I'd be shocked if anyone gave a shit. Unless you're at Bob Jones?

This is the greatest commercial ever made. Now remember when you watch this that this is a real commercial. Warning its probably NSFW.

I'm glad somebody gets my avatar though, and thanks for all the responses, might get a couple hands in right now as a matter of fact.

2 things

1. That is the greatest thing I have seen in a while.

2. I go to UW- Eau Claire, and they have that rule for the whole UW system. I played all last year and just got done tonight. You're fine.

i think you guys are a bit wrong with the "technically its not illegal" comments.

technically, IT IS illegal to gamble online. the gov't just cant enforce it. thats why the US regs are set up to go after the banks and sites, not the individuals. but that doesnt change the fact that it IS still illegal for the individual.

that said, you shouldnt be in too much risk. if the govt wont enforce anything, i doubt the university will, either.

kind of like the "steroids in baseball" defense. they are illegal substances, but the game itself didnt make a "rule" until much later...so everyone thinks its ok for ballplayers to do them, just unethical.

wrong...its against the law to even have them in your pocket...much less your ass.

Granted I don't know much about this, but isn't the illegal part about online gambling the transferring of funds obtained through gambling across state/country borders by wire not the actual gambling? I believe the reason behind the act is to restrict the ease of money laundering, hence why Netteller funds were seized. While several states may have specific laws that make the gambling part illegal, country wide it is not.

But then again this is coming from an relatively uniformed Canadian.

Getting kicked out of your room/ university is a big deal. Id research it pretty thoroughly before I risked it if I were you.

dashi, you are right. the regs were for that purpose.

but, online gambling in the US was already illegal to the individual. the F-ing Frist law didnt change that. it just made it tougher on the individual THROUGH the institutions.

Isn't the college just doing that to cover their ass, e.g. if someone downloads child porn and the FBI want to prosecute, the college can say "We made him sign an agreement, it's not our fault"?

And aren't the authorities putting the squeeze on the banks to enforce this, and not even looking at the ISPs? By that logic, is it at all bad for you to be playing online poker if the college's ISP can't be held liable/punished?
