I just want to share my own experience which I'm sure isn't unique ... but putting it out in the open may help someone thinking to make the move:

I started with Play Money and quite soon got my stack up to +500,000 chips and was winning those Freeroll frenzies for a place at Round 2 Aussie Millions, Poker After Dark that kind of thing. I would win 1 /3 of the 90 player MTT's at 2,000 and then started making the Final Table at 10,000 ... So I thought to myself "Hey I'm good ! why am I wasting my time with play-money" ...

Made my intial deposit of $200 and won my 1st Real-money 45 player $1,25 MTT ... for $17,10 so off I go and start playing like crazy because "I'm da man" aren't I? ... You know what's coming next don't you? ... yep I LOST the lot !

That was probably the best thing that could have happened to me ! I started to look at my game in a new perspective and realised yeah I am a Fish / Donk. That's also when I started to research this subject of real-money online Poker.

So dear reader if you're thinking of making your 1st deposit be warned play money does NOT prepare you for real money, except possibly how to lose it in 30 days.

Be lucky on/off the felt

Hi and welcome to FTR, it's good to have you here!

Nice post! The realisation that you just made, "I'm not as good as I thought I was" is a very very important one not just for new players, but for everybody. It is an essential first step on embarking upon a continuous cycle of self-improvement that is necessary for every player who wishes to keep on beating not just the level they're at, but higher levels as well.

Yes, if you went busto with a $200 roll then this is clearly important too. Read the sticky in the Beginner's Circle called "Banroll Management 101". Once you've read it, go and think about it carefully, then read it again. Repeat at least 5 times - it really is that important.

Thankyou for the reply and YES I am reading up on BR management, which I should be good at considering my occupation. My reason de terre for posting was to highlight the difference between "Play" & "Real" monies, offering myself up for ridicule is not something I relish but somehow is cathortic, IF I could perhaps deter another from making the same mistake.

Good Luck on/off the Felt
