Is the minimum for most places of $50 even really worth depositing on its own as a bare minimum? With $50, you can play a few sit n go's, and ring games at around the .25/.50 fixed limit. Does this really even show much of a profit in the long run? Will the up and down fluctuations always even out? Just wondering if $50 can really stand on its own most of the time, or if one would be better off depositing perhaps $100 minimum or more.

$50 is enough to play up to .5/10 LIMIT HOLDEM RING.
$50 is not enough to play NO LIMIT HOLDEM RING at any stakes.
$50 is enough to play up to $1 NO LIMIT HOLDEM SNGS.
$50 is not enough to play NO LIMIT HOLDEM MTTS at any level.

What is most of the time? Have you played like 30-50K hands?

I dont agree with this at all. $50 will get you going in $2 NL very happily. I started at $5NL with 50 and i have to say it seems pretty hard to bust out with this uch of a Bankroll. You have a fairly safe 10 buyins and more importantly most of the other players buy in for less than $3 anyway. I think $50 is more than enough to get started in NL ring but i would play a few $1 SnGs first to get a little experience if I had never even played the game for money before.

I can see what you are saying, and in some cases itmay be possible to argue the point. But still bankroll manaement is key in poker, probably only behind actually being able to play. There are many players, great or not who have BR problems and have no cash, and others who may be slightly less talented but have made good money from simple discipline.
So, despite this you still must stick to BR 101. Doing so now does make a difference in the future. The high rollers will preach that im sure, ive heard them do it often enough.

I started with 50, and even though I'm ahead of this by some ways now, looking back it was not the smartest thing to do. Depositing at least a hundred and playing the .05/.10 tables still doesn't follow BR management, but might be a bit more reasonable to start off with....

Bankroll management is EVERYTHING. There are several very good posters on this very website that have gone broke because of poor bankroll management. These are guys who can absolutely DESTROY the game. And even THEY went broke. They can KILL the game, and they still went BUST. Why? Because they didn't follow that very link given up above.
You MUST do it. If you're going to start with $50, play LIMIT. (You just might like it better, and its arguably more profitable and great for the risk-averse [like your typical newbie who doesn't want to bust]. Also, if you do decide to make the switch to NL, you'll have a much better foundation to build from. There are no great NL players, just great limit players who play NL )

BR managment is incredibly important yes. I would never argue with this. $50 is 25 x $2 Buyins. This is well within the BR101 guidelines and i think it is more than enough to play this game. Add to that the fact that most of these players are so passive you can play counterplay with very little varience and i dont see why 25 buyins wont be enough unless of course you just arent a winning player at that level.

Agreed.
So ong as you are bankrolled for the limit you play, your bankroll initial deposit should'nt be an issue. $50 is fine if it adequatly rolls you for the liits you play.

I know that my wisdom is pretty paltry, but I must respectfully disagree with you sir. Aabout two years ago I started in on online poker playing limit. Admittedly, I did not find my poker discipline until a few short months ago, but I think that in limit you'll suffer greater swings, and be far more frustrated than in NL. Especially at the lower limits. I played a lot of .25/.50, and you get morons drawing out on you all the time. In NL, you can set the odds. That is the single most important and appealing aspect of NL.
I'm playing really small stakes now, only because I can't spare the cash to move up, but I cannot see myself going back to limit anytime soon. And yes, I am a winning player at my limits, with 12 BB/100 after almost 11,000 hands.
Oh, yeah, 50 bucks is plenty for $2 NL.

Is $50 enough to play .25/.50 Limit games?

300 BB is the rule for limit.
BB = $0.25 300x 0.25 = $75
Not quite enough go for less than 15c BB

You got the wrong BB in that calculation, BB == big bet in this case (.50) not the big blind (.25)
Therefore, BB = $.50 -> 300 x 0.50 = $150
You need about 20-25BB to do a "full" buy in at a table, therefore a full buy is $10-$12.50 at this level

So for a .10/.20 limit i usually pay, it'd be best to have $60 correct?
And a full buy-in at these stakes would be $5?
Just making sure I have these formulas down, I was unaware of them. Also, would it be stupid to play low stakes (.25 BB) NL with a $50-75 bankroll? I have been playing low limit lately and frankly I don't like it nearly as much as NL, like many others I'm sure. Thanks.
