This is my first post in any poker forum. I've been playing online for about 6 weeks. This is my take on poker abilities.

Ability: natural aptitude or acquired proficiency = Great Poker Player

To me a poker player has to have ability consisting of 3 things:

Knowledge: the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association
Skill: a learned power of doing something competently : a developed aptitude or ability
Tool: a means to an end

Without these 3 things making up our ability, we will NEVER be great.

Knowledge is things we learn about the game before we play.
Skills are things we use before or while we play.
Tools are what we use to get paid.

Knowledge:
Pot Odds
Betting to eliminate odds
5/10 Rule
Playing Draws(# of Outs)
Hand Probabilities
Bankroll Management
Patience
Confidence

Skills:
Calculating Pot Odds
Maximizing hands
Positional Advantage(Early/Late)
Blind Stealing
Hand Reading
Controlling Pot Size
Game Selection
Catagorizing Opponents

Tools:
Starting Hands Requirements
Check Raising
Slow Playing
3 Betting
Value Betting
Continuation Bets
Semi Bluffing
Bluffing

This is my starting list of My desired Poker Abilities.
I would like some feedback as to what else it is I need to learn or impliment in my game.

Thanks.

after 6 weeks of playing online you probably shouldnt be trying to think you know what it takes to be great and its that simple.

I think he was listing the stuff he's learned, and asking about the ton of stuff he hasn't learned.

...but you should be thinking about what you need to learn, what skills you need to develop and what tools you need in your toolbox.

Hint: walk before you can run, and learn one thing at a time. Posting here is a good start. Welcome to FTR.

The two most important things

1. experience

2. The ability and desire to learn from your experience.

A buddy once told me that every hand you play makes you better.

Time to grind
Me? I always tell the truth.

Even when I lie.

Well since I got my copy of Poker Office 4 weeks ago I have played 45,000 hands. Not a bad start, but I am still learning. These are the things I feel make a great player. I understand that there is no substitute for experience. I have built upto enough to play some $100 NL games, and have a nice win rate there. As I learn more my win rate increases. I am looking for more Abilities that I need to develope as I gain experience.

Thanks for all the help.

When deciding whether to call a raise in position with a speculative hand, the call is clear if the raise is 5% of the effective stack, the fold is clear if the raise is more than 10% of the effective stack, and its a judgement call between 5% and 10% (lean toward folding).

45,000 hands in a month? What? You cannot possibly have played that many hands---and even if you did, it was massively MT'ing, where you get NO feel for your opponents and can't possibly make informed reads....jmho...

I think I've played 45k hands in less than a week before. A month? That's cake.

Well, I'll tell ya' what...while I'm in no position to argue with this statement, I do have a verrrry hard time believing it. I gather you play 6-max, which means observing a constantly shifting pool of perhaps 60 opponents at the same time. Seems next to impossible to me...

Just wondering what Poker software you use??
Is it Poker Tracker or something else??
Do you have notes on all 108 players??? (this might be 109 if you keep track of yourself as well )

Nice first post Jager. I like these posts that encourage discussion. I don't see why anyone would try to discourage it. Please try to ignore those few posters.

Another important apsect of the game is the desire to improve your game. Not sure if this fits into either of your categories, but if you keep this you can kill this game. Look at Renton's posts from January up to now for the best example I can think of to show what can be accomplished. Keep an open mind and keep learning.
