I saw this and thought "what a nice hand to post on FTR". The reason is that it is perfect for range analysis.

Hellmuth makes this laydown because, when you think about what Durr did on each street, there's really no hand that he's going to have that Hellmuth can beat. Especially, think about how Durr would have approached the flush draw if all he had was trips aces.

It's a good hand because I think a lot of beginning players would have had trouble laying this flush down.

It's an interesting question. Durr has check-called on both flop and turn. Are there hands within Durr's range that he would call a bet with and which Hellmuth could beat? Perhaps not.

Seems like a pretty thin range to be extracting any value from.

Good laydown, but pretty clear I think.
What hands can Durrr possibly have? The only reasonable hands are flushes and full-houses.
And it is very unlikely he would go all-in with a weaker flush than Phil's.
But as a beginner you must also think about this: this is a hand played with two brilliant players.
When Durr is replaced by a donk, the situation changes. Now the all-in could contain hands like three aces (really bad play) and weaker flushes. Depending on how likely it is that your opponent is making a donkish play this might become a call based on the odds.

Durrr could call with worse on river but I think everything that Helmuth beats either bets/raises flop or bets/raises turn.
