I played holdem for the first time a couple weeks ago at a local bar tournament. No entrance fee and you only win bar cash but around 100 people play every week. With no experience I was OK on the odds but I was clearly playing several hands completely wrong. I didn't embarass myself and lasted long enough to avoid the losers tables but the kick in the gut was the girl I went with (who plays all the time) finished in the top 4. Obviously this was an unacceptable assault on my manhood and I needed to be proactive. So I lurked on this site since then and studied up on strategy using the tools of the site. When we played this week not only did I do better, I won the tournament! Still plenty of luck involved and I certainly still made my share of mistakes but it is undeniable that this site helped me a great deal. So thanks to everyone here who puts so much time in helping new players, it certainly made a big difference for me.
