    Default New to online poker

Hi guys. I know it states there are no questions that are stupid on here however. I don't understand the plays I make sometimes that don't work for me. For instance on one table I am playing tight and I get a decent hand AJo whilst in HJ position. I raise 3bb everyone folds aside big blind who calls.

The flop comes 3d 7c Js and I feel I still have the lead so I bet out in front again with a half the pot bet. BB calls again.

Out comes a 9d on the turn so I check and BB checks through.

River comes Ks and I raise and BB calls.

To my delight he only had pocket 10's but u don't understand what value he's getting with an overcard on the board as well as me raising pre flop. I am not complaining as I got value myself but I don't understand online poker why do people insist on calling through to the river (0.01/0.02 stakes BTW)

This is the first time I have got away with I usually get riveted and I was surprised that the BB didnt have a K and rivered me.

Sorry if there is any bad poker grammar or etiquette used as I said I am quite new to this.

    Criticisms are welcome.

    Thanks.

I think the way you played it is fine with the exception that betting the turn would possibly extract more value and protect your Top Pair Top Kicker (TPTK). Congrats on winning the showdown.

Maybe some of the more experienced cash game players will chime in and have more profound thoughts on how the hand was played.

As far as why your opponent called the river bet, he could have seen it as a possible bluff since the turn was checked and the flop bet could be interpreted as standard continuation.

u could off let him hit a over pair QKA. when u have top pair . post flop make the next raise big enough to either cost him more than the pot . there is no flush on straight draw for him to hit . don't give him a chance to hit over pair cheaply

    Hi!

On the flop, if he always folded to a bet when he didn't have at least top pair, then he'd be folding so often that you could bluff him with any two cards. That means he's got to call with worse than top pair at least some of the time, and TT on a Jxx board is the next best thing. =)

    Does that help any?

His call on the Flop is okay I think. You might just be trying to scare him away, and when you start to check the turn, villain believes he is ahead, and I would have bet the Turn if I were villian. The river is bad for him, but he just fires through. How much did you bet on the River?

Bet flop, bet turn, bet river for at least 3/4 pot at this stake for max value.

Other players do some strange things at the micro stakes, which is exactly why you can build a bankroll. Instead of dismissing other players as bad, try to understand why they do the things that they do and take notes. Then post some hands and your thought process and better players will unpick your logic if it is faulty.

Fwiw, villain folding TT to a flop bet on this board would be very bad, as he is ahead often enough to call. The only exception is if he knows you only raise the best hands preflop and that you only ever bet the flop when you have at least top pair. Generally at this stake however, people will call with any pair on the flop.

Especially when facing lower skilled players I found it more helpful to recognize the tendencies rather than trying to understand their reasoning. In this case you can make a mental note that he will call cbets in position with an underpair on a dry board and continue to pay off on the river when a scarecard hits. These are the things that will help you in future hands.
Thinking about what this call tells you about his image of you, or his own mental state - that's all fluff that is not going to help you make better decisions.
