Pelion
This afternoon at a little after 1.00 pm GMT I broke the 1K bankroll barrier.

Its been a long journey. I played my first game of texas holdem almost exactly a year ago, for play money plastic chips sat on the floor of our living room with 2 uni mates. I sucked badly but it seemed like fun so I signed up for an account at Empire poker and started playing their play money SnGs. I watched a bit of poker night live and learnt not to play A2o and it wasnt long bebfore I was crushing them.

I made my first money deposit towards the end of July 2005. Playing for real money excited me and terrified me at the same time. It was way more fun than pretend money but I still sucked hard. I managed to lose my first $50 deposit on Empire poker in a matter of days after building up to the dizzying heights of $120 playing a mixture of 25NL and the $5 and $10 SnGs and pulling the biggest and most outrageous bluffs I could think of. Although not exactly succesful, my first adventure into poker got me hooked and I started reading around on the internet for anything that might help my game.

I found FTR around August and after reading for a few weeks I decided to give online poker another go. I had read about bankroll managment and decided I would never bust again so I headed over to pokerstars and put another $50 in, this time playing the 5NL cash games. I managed to grind my way slowly down to around $30 before realising that I still hadnt got the hang of tight preflop play. I decided to just play the top 19 hands and all of a sudden I was winnning. It was slow at first, winning $2 at a time then losing $1.50 but after a while I began to just *know* when I was beaten. I played the weakest-tightest game youll find at 5NL and folded my way back up to $50. After a while I began to add tables and a few more preflop hands and everything just seemed to start comming together. At this time I was also posting probably 5+ hands a day for Fnord to rip to pieces. Ive probably posted more hands at 5NL than at any other stake and that was really what pulled my game together.

Eventually I built my BR up to $200 and decided to move up to 10NL at stars. It went disasterously. I was so sure everyone at this high a stake must be a pro so I went back to bluffing and calling huge "bluffs". It actually took me 3 attempts to move up to 10NL but I kept at it and eventually I made it.

Ever since moving up to 10nL I havnt looked back. I hit some really nasty varience on the move up to 25NL but I was pretty sure my play was solid so I got through it after dropping around $100 in less than a week. Now Im sitting at 1K Ive started playing a little 50NL when there arent enough full 25NL tables, Ive just finished my exams and everythings just dandy.

I just hope I can put as much back into this great site as Ive got out of it.

THANKYOU FTR
gabe: Ive dropped almost 100k in the past 35 days.

bigspenda73: But how much did you win?

Good job, and an inspiration to us just getting started. I'm a few months in and pretty much in line with what you've experienced. Rock on.

Nice work! I feel your pain. Moving back to $25 full time soon (just hit the 10K hand mark at $10NL, and feel like I plugged some leaks, so I probably will. Wanted to get a decent sample beforehand). Thanks for the help so far!!

Current BR: $10080(04/06/2009) BR Goal: $15000--I LOVE RB!!!

Congrats Pelion! Good job. Your post made me reflect on my journey also...not trying to steal your thunder here...just want to say thanks to FTR for everything also. I started playing online in Feb 2006 and being a newb, deposited $50 into Stars and jumped into $25nl. I had been playing home games for about a year and have always done well, so I figured "Why start at the bottom?". I had never heard of bankroll management so I just went for it. Luckily, I played the meanest tight/weak game on the planet and I only risked my stack when I knew I would win. As such, over the course of the next couple of months I built it up to $500. But I had a lot of holes to plug. So I read every post on this site with great interest and soaked in as much as I could. I then bought PokerTracker and this only reinforced to me that I actually sucked even though I was winning! So over the last couple of months I worked on plugging leaks and multi-tabling and sucessfully built up to 4 tables at a time with a win rate substantially equal to my single table win rate. And then a few weeks ago, after 27k hands of $25nl at 11BB/100, I moved up to $50nl. I have made modifications to my game to adapt and am doing well but this would have never been possible without the help I get from this community. My bankroll just passed $2k so again, THANKS to all of you. This site rawks.

Me too mate... although I havnt spoken to you in agews. Done with exams nbow so you have no exuse so git here biatch !! !!

HAHA 9im really a fair bit drunbk right now nbut ill say what im feeling. My post really was a thankyo0u b4ecause this is such a great site and I want to give so much back (but mostly when im soberf ). To all you guys who said I have inspired you, I hope I really have because this takes a shot load of work, but at the same time it isnt that hard if you put that work in. You guys should be looking at renton rather than me .

I plan to play 50NL and hopefully 100NL by the end of summer but im gunna be drunk for a while yet .

My advice to all the beginners would be to pick a goal (based on AOKs, Fnords and Chards posts) and stick to it. There will be times when everything seriously sucks but keep at it and you will pull through.

Yeah ... like yesterday. Since finding FTR in January, I have been able to take my "last" (as in ... I am tired of losing and this is my last shot) buyin of $200 and run it up to $1600 as of June 8th. Then June 9th came. Everything I touched went up in smoke (like my KK going all in preflop against a 45 / 13 villain who pushed with A 2 spades only to hit a flush on the river card). What a sucky day. Ended by me bubbling out of a freeroll after 1 1/2 hours of work.

But, as Pelion says, this too shall pass. Congrats to Pelion for the terrific run.

Congrats, before you know it you will have your first 1k losing day. The only thing better than winning a lot of money is losing a lot of money as they say :P

In all seriousness, congratulations and keep up the good work.

Lol, that's horrible dutch.. "Als we ooit aan dezelfde tafel bij PP zitten, zal je het verstaan" is what you seem to be trying to say.

I gather that it's an inside (joke) thing, so question answered I suppose.

I've heard it several times too usually when some of the old school, hardcore gamblers like Puggy Pearson or Amarillo Slim are mentioned.
