I was just reading an article on Pocketfives (just wanted to venture out of the FTR area) and it was about the high variance in MTT. And I got to thinking about not just MTT, but cash games, along with SnG, and there differing variance and all the other things that go along with each of them. So I had a few questions that im hoping the more advance players can answer?

1) Weighing in on risk vs. reward, which of the three types (MTT, cash game, SNG) would produce the greatest amount of money, adding in factors such as variance?

2) Which of these three is easiest to learn and develope into a winning player?

3)Which of the three is the best for BR of $1000 or less?

4) Use the following example to answer the question, Who would make the most money?

Three players...each one playing either strictly SnG, MTT, cash-game over the course of a year

Player one: 2000 MTT
Player two: 200,000 hands
player three: 5,000+ SnG ( idk what a good sample size is for SnG)

1) Cash, I don't know why you would factor in variance.

2) Sng

3) I dunno

4) Impossible to answer
<Staxalax> I want everyone to put my quote in their sigs

1) Why wouldnt you add in variance for cash games...?
2) #4 is not impossible to answer ( I would say you have to think outside the box)

Skill-Wise:
Cash is the hardest to learn
SNG's are the easiest to learn
MTT's are somewhere in the middle

Money-Wise:
I've always heard that good cash players make more than equal-rolled sng/mtt players.

if you know how to get the answer then why ask the question?

he didn't mean just cash games. there's nothing really to "add in" about variance when talking about profitability. variance exists in cash, sng, and mtt play...what else is there to say?

I think I posted this tread in the wrong direction...

So let me start over...kind of anyway.

We have one player who is equally skilled in cash, SnG, MTT

he plays large sample sizes of each..

Due to variance, skill, etc... which one would the player make the most money on assuming he plays low-limt...

mtt can be more profitable in the short-term if you win big right away. in the long-term, i believe cash is most profitable (but is hardest to learn). so that means sng is the least profitable i guess. that makes sense as it is the easiest to learn.

All other things being equal you'll make more at cash, then MTT, then SNGs because the stacks are deeper and so your opps can make larger mistakes.

But, if you are posting this to figure out what type of game to play this is the wrong way to think about it. All things will not be equal - some people will be better with deep stacks, some will be good at dealing with pressure, some will be super math whizzes, etc etc etc. The most important thing is to play what you enjoy because it's hard/impossible to put in the hours of study & play if it isn't (at least sometimes) fun for you.

thanks drmcboy....im not actually trying to figure out which type to play I just thought it was kind of interesting and wanted to see what other s thought about it.... I figured cash game would be on top of the profitablity spectrum, but with the winnings being very large sums of money for 1st in a MTT I wasnt sure...so thank you for answering. I do have one more question however...and it may be a dumb one but I will throw it out there anyway....

Which of the three (Cash, SnG, MTT) have the greatest variance?
Im pretty sure its MTT but im not exactly sure why. Maybe because of the number of people in the MTT? but it would like it if someone could give insight on this....thanks again

MTTs you can play very well for a long time and still not win any money to speak of, then play 2 games and make it deep into the FT on each and be way ahead.
Just playing to improve.

flomo will become famous soon enough
this thread has potential-----even though it is dying out
i suck at poker so stop reading

given equal skill levels for beating villains in types of poker
variance is not the question but how one deals with variance
one who can handle variance would be better off in MTT's
a close second would be SnG's
and cash last

skill level
1 cash
2 MTTs
3 SnG

martin and drmc aleady answered hyour original questions

Thanks for the post Flomo. I never really thought of it that way in terms of dealing with variance, rather than variance all in itself...you make a good point.
