i was advised to move to $5nl when my br was $80 (and only buy in for $5). things went well. should i try $10nl when br = $150?
my goal when moving to $5nl was to play 10k hands and see what happens. br = $143 after 6500 hands $5nl 6-max, so, should i play 3500 more hands (regardless of br) or move up when i hit $150?
or maybe i should wait til i get to $200. i dunno, what do you advise?

Moving up is always tricky. Sometimes you'll hit the ground running and it'll be no problem; on other ocassions it'll hurt and you may have to drop back down.
A good safety margin is 20 buy-ins, so $200 is good for $10NL.
That said the games are not very cuthroat and so it's not too risky to take a shot. You can play $10NL with 15 buy-ins, but you'll have to realise that you can only lose about $50 before you have to move back down.
As you move up you'll begin to see that losing 5, 10, 15 buy-ins in a run is not uncommon, but at this level you'll probably be okay.
I'd say if you're comfortable at $5NL then sure, take a shot, but be prepared to move back down if things go against you, even if it's "just variance".

I think 15 is very uncommon. I don't know many guys who went through that many. My record is 12, and it was during a period of amazingly bad situations. In one night I held KK 6 times when an opponent held AA, and the same night I had several set under set situations.
Anyway, I say move up at $120, drop back at $90 for 10NL. That game's pretty low variance if you play nitty...and it's still not going to take long to advance. GL.
