I am relatively new to poker (I've just started studying this year). I just got back from the MGM grand this weekend where I played a $2/4 limit table for 13 hrs straight. I ended up winning $150 which is more than the 1 big bet an hr rate, so I felt pretty good about that. But I have a tendency to get anxious though when I first sit down, playing cards I shouldn't and taking them too far. I went down early but then tightened up and came back. Now having read my 6th book on strategy, i was wondering if you all had any mneumonic devices that help you remember situational or statistical strategy when in the heat of the battle? Any shortcuts to calculating pot size, pot odds, or cards in or out of position etc. Im just trying to figure out ways to easily recall criteria in my mind while playing.

Well, one thing that has helped me is the 4 and 2 rule. After the flop multiply your outs by 4, after the turn multiply your outs by 2. This gives you the rough percentage of how often you will hit. So if I have 9 outs after the flop, x4 tells me I have a 36% chance to hit by the end.
It is not exact but very close, so gives you a good guideline.
The thing I need to memorize is percentages for starting hands improving on the flop.

This has helped me a lot too and it is accurate when you don't have too many outs. Where there are tons of outs then it is a little off. For example, if you are 4 to a flush and open eneded for a stright then you have 9+(8-2) or 15 outs. The 4-2 rule would say your chances are 60% for turn or river and 30% for river.
