It seems like almost every time I feel like I can't raise with a hand, but I have to call that I have the worst of it.
Here's a recent borderline example:
Player notes on the villain: "overbets the pot on all streets with big hands. Beware of big pf raises"
I've been playing previously with him. He limps on occasions, and almost never raises. When he raises, he makes it .30c or more to go.
I have AKs on the button. He raises 38c with one limper. I call, the limper calls. You could make a case for 3-betting. I was hoping he had maybe AQ, AJ, and I could trap him if an A hits. If he calls the 3-bet I'm at best 50/50.
And he didn't follow through when he didn't hit, so I thought I could steal it on the flop as well if he has the same hand, or AQ, AJ...
Flop comes AQ9 rainbow, and he bets 70c into 90c. I call and the limper calls. The limper has less. Turn comes a blank. He bets $1.5. I call and the limper calls. Now there's a whole different problem. The limper could easily have Q9, QT, TJ, KJ... and he's almost getting the right implied odds here, but I'm not even sure if I can beat the initial raiser, so I just have to let him draw I guess.

Now... the last hand I was hoping he could have beats me now, and he bets 2$
Against most players at these stakes, this would be a no brainer, and I'd be happy to get it AI on any street.
I couldn't get myself to fold, the limper does fold, and I'm not the least bit surprised that he shows a set of Queens.
Can you really fold TPTK on that board? Or similar situations with a tight player in the hand and you get 3-bet on a flop like 27J with AJ, but after playing with the guy for an hour you simply can't think of a hand that you could beat?

If you put him on a hand such as AQ, why are you calling his flop bet when he conceivably has two pair to your TPTK? Raise his flop bet, if he re-raises you were probably correct on putting him on AQ. You can then safely fold and SAVE future calls/bets. Raising a bettor will get you more information than just calling and you will actually save money by doing it because you're not putting in one or two more bets on the turn and river.

I was too busy hating my spot to even think of that. You're right, that would have probably worked better. If he did have AJ he would have probably checked it down after a raise... probably even folded.
