I dont understand why i cant do this but i cant grasp the concept of expressing a percentage in odds form i.e. 34% into a x to 1 odd.

If odds of something are 1:1 that means that it's as likely to happen as it is not to happen.
If odds of something happening are 2:1 that means one outcome is twice as likely as the other outcome.
The former in % notation is a 50-50 (or 50%) chance. The second in % is a 67-33 (67% or 33% chance of happening, where you normally focus only on one output that is more interesting to you than the other.
2:1
2+1 = 3
1/3 = 0.33 = 33%
2/3 = 0.67 = 67%
3:1
3+1 = 4
1/4 = 0.25 = 25%
3/4 = 0.75 = 75%

If you have a 34% chance of winning, that means you will lose 66% of the time. So 66:34 or approx 2:1.
If you have a 25% chance of winning, that means you lose 75% of the time. Therefore, 25% in a ratio is 3:1.
To go the other way from ratio to percentage is easy as well. Say you have a 4:1 chance of hitting your card, while it's easy to memorize that this is 20%, you can also do the math by taking whats on the right side of the ratio and dividing it by the sum of both sides. So 4:1 would look like 1 / (1 + 4) = 1/5 = 20%.

34% = 34/100 = 17/50
50 = 33 + 17
33:17
22% = 22/100 = 11/50
50 = 39 + 11
39:11
10% = 10/100 = 1/10
10 = 9 + 1
9:1
45% = 45/100 = 9/20
20 = 11 + 9
11:9

I think the other guys have answered your question.
Overheard in the Pokerstars chat:
Villian: If I'm 3:1 on winnin' some hands, what's that in percent?
Hero: Ok, you will win 3 out of 4 hands. How many will you win out of 100 hands?
Villian: I wasn't planning on playin' that many hands

You already have it in odds form if you have the percentage. Express the odds as X% 100-X)% and divide both by the smaller number. In your example, it would be 34:66 odds, dividing both by 34 you get 1:1.94
