Last night in a home game, a diamond flush was on the board. 4 people in the hand at showdown, 3 had a diamond. Turns out they had this wierd rule, that if a full hand is on the board, it cancels itself out, and the next highest hand takes it down. So somone w/ a pair of A's ended up taking the pot.
So then there was an argument between people that thought the pot should be split, those that thought that the board cancels itself , and those who know that the highest 5 cards win regardless.
I wasn't in the hand, so it didn't affect me right then, and it's not my house, but if I had been the guy w/ the high flush, I wouldn't have let that slide.
We finally convinced almost everybody, and agreed that from now on we'll play correctly. But has anybody else ever heard of a rule like that? I understand somone new, mabey not realizing that not all flushes are equel. I don't know why, but it seems some people have a hard time grasping the whole highest 5 cards idea. But canceling the board???

Never heard of it, and would have had serious problems with the way that hand happened wether I was in the hand or not.

It would also be the last time I ever played there.
I built my own poker table... Check It Out

in this instance, if no one had a higher diamond than the lowest diamond on the board, it would have been split. If one or more people have a diamond that's higher than the lowest diamond on the board, high diamond wins the pot with a flush with the best diamond kicker.

Bring a rulebook if you go back.

Yeah, we've always played by the correct rules, until this came up. It wasn't just 1 person either, several people had been playing like this. We did get it straightend out though, so there won't be this problem in the future.
I was thinking about it this morning though, and I should have bet $50-100 that I was right. One of them probley would have called me. Oh well, missed oportunities...

The only rule is best 5 card hand.

If the best 5 are on the board, then it's a split. If someone can make a better 5 then everyone else, he wins.

Anyone pulling a rule out of their ass is an ass.

Anyone who can't refute that rule, shouldn't really be playing.

-'rilla is kinda grumpy today.

Smithers, use the amnesia ray.

Precisely.

We had a similar situation like this in a home game one time about the best five cards. One guy was so convinced he won the pot he put 50 on it and called one of the local casino's. He had to forfeit the pot and caugh up an extra fifty. Funny thing is the pot wasn't even fifty bucks.

Hedging bets is for suckers.

I've played where we didn't se the best hand.

Board shows 8855A. So the only question was who has the 8 and who has the 5.

Well one of them held an 85, and the other held an A8. So we split the pot.

Oops! 888AA beats 88855. No one even caught the A situation until the hand was over and chips were split.
I don't know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway.
Whatever it is...
I'm against it.

Hump will you make a "best 5 card hand" sticky so we can work through these threads a lot quicker?

I tried!
http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...pic.php?t=2614

it's the first FAQ!

You'd think that "Read before posting" means they would read it before posting. But everyone thinks their situation is special.

Ah, well... try harder!

You could always just link the FAQ and lock the threads.

Tough love!

It seemed like a rational way to get an authoritative answer at the time, but is funny as hell looking back on it.

The funniest part was when he asked the person who answered, she said "I don't know; Let me get you someone who plays poker."
