i have a problem sometimes in online play especially. When i build up a big stack, i sometimes tend to slowly lose it. Is there any tips or advice that would help me not do this such as cashing out everytime i make 5x my buy in or something like that. What do you guys do to avoid this problem?

I do the same thing a lot of times. Don't call with crap just because you have the money or cash out and rebuy.

I usually like to cash out/rebuy when I double my stack. If you're getting bad beats there's nothing really else you can do.

If your play doesnt change then you shouldn't.
Unless the table gets a bit sharkier.

If your play doesn't change and you're still confident you can beat the table, then there's no reason to leave. You have the advantage of having most people covered, and cashing out and then sitting back down with less money doesn't lessen your chances of a bad beat.
And the implied odds for your opponents will only be as large as their stacks because they can only win the size of their stack.
However, if your play IS changing, then I'd cash out. I oftentimes feel myself loosen up once I have a larger chip lead in a ring game.

i love playing with a big stack. i find i tend to play my best when i have a big stack. I do play a little looser, but its probably on the scale of 5% more hand or so, which really isn't too much. I find having the big stack i am able to press my edges more effectively, i am smarter about drawing, and in general people call me more. only problem i've ever had with it, is on royalvegas i like using the little slider to raise, and the one or two times i've gotten to 4-5x the buy-in, the slider increments get a little too big. Oh woe is me.

If you buy-in for $100, make $200, then lose that $200 (which has to happen if you're eventually losing everything), how is it now more likely that you'll lose the other $100? I'm not really sure what you're saying.
The only effect that a large stack has in a cash game is that there is a greater maximum which you can risk on a given hand (up to the size of the second-largest stack, since you can't possibly risk more than that amount). This is really the only factor I can see which should influence your decision as to whether or not to cash out a certain amount.
